Freshman Fires Career-Best 65 (-5) to Pace Ole Miss

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.Jackson Suber fired a career-low 65 (-5), tying the lowest round of the tournament, to lead the Ole Miss men's golf team on day two of the 2019 SEC Championship. The freshman attacked the 7,005-yard Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club to jump into the top five and sit just two shots off the individual pace.

After a consistent opening round that featured a tournament-best 16 pars, Suber continued to limit his mistakes throughout Thursday's round. He opened with four straight pars before making a lone bogey on the par-4 fifth. Suber responded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to make the turn at 1-under on his round. The Tampa, Florida, native went flag hunting on the back nine, recording birdies on three of the first four holes to conclude a stretch of five birdies in seven holes. Another birdie at No. 17 combined with five pars resulted in a bogey-free 31 (-4) coming in, completing his best round as a Rebel. At 5-under for the tournament (70-65—135), Suber is tied for fourth behind leaders Julian Perico (Arkansas) and Graysen Huff (Auburn at 7-under).

Suber's 65 matched the lowest round at this year's SEC Championship, and he became the third Rebel to shoot 65 at Sea Island in the last two seasons. Cecil Wegener also fired a 65 as a freshman, and Josh Seiple had a 5-under round of his own at last year's tournament as well.

As a team, Ole Miss shot a 283 (+3) to enter tomorrow's final round at 2-under (275-283—558). The Rebels find themselves in ninth place, two shots behind No. 15 South Carolina (279-277—556) for eighth. Following Friday's final round of stroke play, the top eight teams advance to the match play portion of the championship. Through 36 holes, the Rebels have recorded 35 birdies to rank second in the field behind Auburn's 37.

"We didn't get off to the greatest start again, but we fought our tails off especially on that back nine," head coach Chris Malloy said. "If we can get off to a little better start, we'll be in a really good position. I was proud of our fight. We're certainly still in this thing to get to match play."

Along with Suber, fellow freshman Jack Gnam followed up a career-low 67 (-3) yesterday with an even-par 70 in round two. The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native birdied No. 2 before seeing his bogey-free streak end at 20 holes with a miscue at No. 3. At 3-under for the tournament (67-70—137), Gnam sits in a tie for 12th individually.

"Both of our freshman have been stepping up," Malloy said. "Jackson today was about as flawless as you can get around this place. The wind started to pick up on the back nine, and he didn't let it affect him and played a great round of golf. He's been doing that lately, and we look for more of that from him tomorrow."

Seniors Seiple and Beau Briggs shot rounds of 74 (+4) to contribute to the team score. After opening with a 2-under 68, Briggs produced 12 pars, five bogeys and one birdie to move to 2-over par and tied for 38th. Seiple recorded three birdies on the back nine, but a pair of double bogeys prevented him from climbing the leaderboard.

The final round of stroke play begins Friday morning at 6:30 a.m. CT with Ole Miss going off No. 1 alongside No. 15 South Carolina and Kentucky. Only four strokes separate fourth through ninth place, so the Rebels have an opportunity to qualify for match play with a solid round tomorrow.
