Rebels Win Two Titles at Day One of Spec Towns Invite

Competition Resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday
ATHENS, Ga. – Ole Miss track & field started the weekend strong, as Shey Taiwo won the hammer throw while Peyton Weissmann and Cole Colozzo shared first place in the pole vault at the first day of the Spec Towns Invite on Friday afternoon.
Taiwo took the women's hammer title with a throw of 60.18m (197-05), the first career win in the hammer for the sophomore. Senior Annika Larsson finished close behind in second at 57.28m (187-11), while sophomore Kendall Chavarria placed fourth at 54.83m (179-10). Fellow sophomore Leah Klein set a PR at 47.60m (156-02) that ranks 13th in Ole Miss history, while freshman Tedreauna Britt rounded out the Rebel lineup in eighth at 47.21m (156-02).
The Rebel men also found success in the hammer, led by Joseph Benedetto, who finished third overall and first among collegians. The freshman threw a personal best for the third straight week, this time coming in at 57.90m (189-11) – which is tied for eighth in school history and 34th on the East Region list. Sophomore Chris Long also competed, placing fifth at 52.83m (173-04).
The Rebel pole vaulters had another successful week following two strong outings to open the outdoor season at the Trailblazer Challenge and last week at home for the Ole Miss Classic. Peyton Weissmann and Cole Colozzo emerged victorious in the men's pole vault, with the duo tied for the win after both cleared 5.05m (16-06.75). That height was a personal best for Colozzo that pushes him to eighth in Ole Miss history and 27th in the East Region. The share of the win was also the second in a row for Weissmann.
Lindsey Murray rolled yet again, finishing as the top collegian in the women's pole vault for the third straight week. The senior cleared 3.95m (12-11.50), which trailed only unattached athlete Carolina Moll (4.20m/13-09.25). Junior Nicole Kallenberger placed fifth for Ole Miss at 3.80m (12-05.50).
Senior Christian Yancey led the Rebels on the track on Friday, finishing fifth in the men's 400-meter hurdles with an impressive career performance. Yancey ran 53.34, a new PR by 1.51 seconds that moved him up to 12th all-time at Ole Miss. Freshman Kenney Broadnax also competed for the Rebels, finishing 11th at a personal best 55.79.
Alex Enright put together another solid performance in the javelin, finishing in second place within a half-foot of her PR at 44.98m (147-07). Lauren Hoselton also competed in the javelin, finishing third at 31.09m (102-00).
The Rebels also had representation in both the men's and women's long jump. Manny Foster led the men in third place with a leap of 7.38m (24-02.50). He was trailed by Demond Fleming, who came in eighth at 6.58m (21-07.25). Kaira Simmons had the best jump for the Rebel women, finishing ninth with a jump 5.86m (19-02.75).
Day One also featured the first four events of the women's heptathlon: 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter dash. Kieshonna Brooks leads the Rebels in fourth place with 3,169 points after setting personal bests in the 200-meter dash (fourth, 24.68) and high jump (seventh, 1.57m/5-01.75), and season-bests in the hurdles (third, 13.67) and shot put (seventh, 9.95m/32-07.25). Ghania Warren is in sixth place with 2,932 points after career days in the high jump (fourth, 1.66m/5-05.25), hurdles (seventh, 15.17) and shot put (10th, 9.27m/30-05.00). Haley Hood ranks right behind her in seventh place at 2,604 points, which included a PR in the shot put (eighth, 9.53m/31-03.25).
Day Two of the Spec Towns Invite begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. CT with the men's and women's 5K. Field events are set to begin with the shot put at 10 a.m. CT.
