Ole Miss Shoots Final Round 286, Finishes One Shot Short of NCAA Championships
STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Jackson Suber fired a final round 67 (-3), the second-lowest NCAA Tournament round in program history, but the Ole Miss men's golf team ended its season Wednesday just short of a bid to the NCAA Championships. The Rebels finished in sixth at the Stanford Regional after coming in as the No. 9 seed. Ole Miss shot a final round 286 (+6) and fell just one shot back of No. 14 LSU for fifth place.
With a young group that included three freshmen in the lineup, Ole Miss put together a great showing at the regional by beating four teams ranked in Golfstat's Top-50 including No. 24 NC State, No. 36 South Florida, No. 38 Kansas, and No. 47 Virginia.
"This is a hard pill to swallow," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We came in not really knowing what to expect having three freshmen and a sophomore in our lineup, who played extremely well the first two days but just couldn't piece it together today. We didn't have an ideal finish, but that's somewhat to be expected with a young group of guys going through this and learning."
Ole Miss was led on the final day by Suber, who fired a 3-under 67 with five birdies, 11 pars and only two bogeys. He finished strong with a 4-under 31 coming in, making four birdies and no bogeys. The round was the second-best by a Rebel in NCAA postseason play, just one behind Sarut Vongchaisit's 66 (-4) shot in round one Monday. The freshman vaulted up the leaderboard 17 spots to tie for 12th overall with a 54-hole total of 1-under 209 (74-68-67), improving each round he played. His 12th-place performance was the best ever by an Ole Miss freshman at an NCAA Regional. Suber tied for the team lead in birdies with 13, and played the par 3s and par 5s under par throughout the week, going 3-under and 5-under, respectively. His par-3 scoring led the entire Stanford Regional field.
Consistent play earned Jack Gnam a top-20 finish individually for the second straight outing. The freshman finished with back-to-back even par rounds after an opening with 1-over 71 to finish with a three-round total of 211 (+1), tying his career-low 54-hole total that he set at the SEC Championship. Gnam fired a 3-under 32 on Stanford Golf Course's back nine that included a near hole-in-one on the par-3 14th. His tee shot landed just short of the hole before hitting the flagstick and stopping inches away from the cup. With 13 birdies over 54 holes, Gnam tied Suber for team-high in birdies for the week.
Vongchaisit, a late addition to the lineup via an injury to senior Beau Briggs on Sunday, tied for 21st individually. The freshman went under par the first two rounds, including a career-low 66 to open up his first postseason event as a Rebel. Vongchaisit was second on the team in birdies with 11.
Cecil Wegener put together a top-30 finish, a new career-best finish at regionals. After a rough start, he battled back with three birdies over the last nine holes. The sophomore finished with a 4-over 74 to cap off his second career NCAA appearance, going 71-68-74--213 (+3).
Senior Josh Seiple wrapped up his Ole Miss career, finishing with a three-day score of 224 (79-70-75).
"We came in as the No. 9 seed, but I don't think we were a nine seed in our guys' minds," Malloy said. "This time of year, getting into the postseason, everyone is good and it comes down to the little things and doing that over a three-day stretch. We just didn't do the little things well today. We'll get better from it, but this one is going to sting."
Regional host and No. 12 Stanford claimed the regional title with a 23-under 817. No. 2 Arizona State (829), No. 26 North Carolina (829), Georgia Southern (834) and No. 14 LSU (842) made up the top five teams advancing to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
