Hengst Qualified for the NCAA Championships in the Men’s 1500-Meter
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field freshman Dalton Hengst has been named the SEC Outdoor Men's Co-Freshman Runner of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.
Hengst was the top freshman finisher in the men's 1500-meter at the SEC Outdoor Championships as the fifth-place finisher, which also earned him SEC All-Freshman honors for the outdoor season. Most recently, Hengst qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships after snagging one of the final time qualifier spots at the NCAA East Regional this past weekend. Hengst ran a personal best 3:43.92 at home at the Joe Walker Invite on April 12, the eighth-best time in Ole Miss history and the 35th-best in the NCAA this season.
In addition to Hengst, sophomore Waleed Suliman was named First-Team All-SEC after winning the men's 1500-meter title – making Ole Miss the first school to win at least four consecutive men's 1500-meter titles since Arkansas won five in a row from 1996-2000. It was the third SEC title of the year for Suliman, who made Ole Miss the first school in SEC history to win five consecutive men's mile titles indoors while also running on the Rebel men's championship distance medley relay team. Suliman also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1500-meter alongside Hengst.
Other honorees include sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after taking silver in the women's 10K at the SEC Outdoor Championships, and Tedreauna Britt, who earned All-Freshman honors as the top freshman finisher in the women's discus in seventh place.
A total of 10 Rebel athletes will compete in nine different events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 5-8 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The meet will be televised and streamed on the ESPN family of networks.
