Softball Drops Pitcher’s Duel on Seventh-Inning Walk-Off
5/3/2019 | Softball
Brittany Finney Tosses Gem Despite Being Saddled with the Loss
ATHENS, Ga. – Ole Miss (36-14, 13-8 SEC) fended off a handful of Georgia (37-16, 10-12 SEC) scoring chances to send Friday's game into the final inning scoreless but the Bulldogs were finally able to breakthrough, walking off with a 1-0 victory at Jack Turner Stadium.
Despite taking her first loss in well over a month, Finney put in an excellent performance in the circle, surrendering the single run on six hits, striking out four.
Both teams had quality chances to strike in the first inning. Ole Miss led off the game with singles by Kylan Becker and Abbey Latham, while Georgia saw Alyssa DiCarlo register a one-out triple. Both Finney and Georgia starter Kylie Bass, though, were able to get out of their respective halves of the inning unscathed.
After working out of danger in the opening frame, both starting pitchers battled back and forth through the early innings with relative ease, Georgia threatened to break the scoreless tie in the fourth, putting two on with one out on a walk and a Rebel throwing error. Instead, Finney fired back with a strikeout of Justice Milz for the second out and induced a weak pop-up to retire the side.
In the next half inning, it was Ole Miss chance to threaten. Mikayla Alle got things started with a soft liner past the outstretched glove of shortstop Alyssa DiCarlo, with Latham taking a pitch off the elbow guard to put two on with two outs. Autumn Gillespie hit a Bass offering right on the button but her hot shot was right at DiCarlo, who gloved it to keep the score deadlocked.
That changed in the bottom of the seventh, with Armistead sending a 1-out double to the gap to bring in Milz from first, giving the Bulldogs the Game One win.
The Rebels will get a chance to bounce back in quick fashion, turning around to face the Bulldogs in a rematch at 11 a.m. CT at Jack Turner Stadium.
Quick Hits
