Alana Kelly vs. Nebraska, Feb. 2, 2019 - Prone

Trio of Rebel Rifle Athletes Compete at ISSF World Cup

5/31/2019 | Rifle

MUNICH, Germany – The USA Shooting Team was well represented by Ole Miss Rifle as incoming senior Alana Kelly, alum Alison Weisz, and assistant coach Jean-Pierre (JP) Lucas competed at the International Shooting Sport Federation Rifle competition Sunday through Thursday in Munich, Germany.

Over 920 athletes from 98 countries were anticipated to compete in the ISSF Pistol/Rifle World Cup with 28 competitors representing for the United States.

Weisz, a two-time Ole Miss All-American, finished tied for 40th out of 149 shooters in the women's 10-meter Air Rifle event with 625.4 points. She then teamed up with Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) in the 10-meter Air Rifle Mixed competition for a 17th-place finish out of 76 national teams. Weisz (314.9) and Sherry (311.7) combined for 626.6 points.

In late April, Weisz finished 14th in 10-meter air rifle with a 627.4 in the World Cup competition in Beijing, China. She also finished fourth alongside Sherry in the same mixed event.

Kelly and Lucas competed in Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) relays to round out Ole Miss' United States representation. Kelly finished 30th (1146 pts) in the women's 50-meter Three Position Rifle event in her first international match. Lucas was ninth (625.1 pts) in men's 10-meter Air Rifle.

The athletes were attempting to win medals and 2020 Olympic Games quotas. An Olympic quota is a country's ticket to participate in a specific event in the 2020 Olympic Games. Earning an Olympic quota in competition ensures the country a spot in that particular event, not necessarily the athlete.

Kelly and Weisz were selected to compete in Germany and/or China during the Spring Selection Match back in late March. Weisz finished first in the 10-meter air rifle during USA qualification. The ISSF World Cup for rifle was also held in New Delhi, India in February and will conclude in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in early September.

Ole Miss Rifle athletes will head to the 2019 USA Shooting National Championships, which runs from June 21-29 in Ft. Benning, Georgia.

Weisz will take aim at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Events are scheduled from July 26-August 11.

Rapid Fire with Assistant Coach JP Lucas…

Opening Thoughts…
"It was great to have Ole Miss represented at the ISSF World Cup this past week in Munich, Germany."

On Alana Kelly Competing on the World Stage…
"I believe it's always great to be put in unfamiliar situations. Alana having been able to compete on the international level for her first time, has given her a great opportunity to test her skills. Alana did a great job and stuck to what she has learned in the past to be able to learn and progress as a shooter during this past week."

On Ali Weisz's Success at the Next Level…
"Ali is currently a very strong competitor for the USA. It's always great to see her competing at the highest level. She is continuing to work hard and striving for excellence within the upcoming competitions."
