Ole Miss Rifle Senior Reflects As Graduation Approaches
Four years ago, I came to Ole Miss as a walk-on not knowing what to expect or how I would make a place for myself in one that was new to me. Now I will walk away in May with a new family of teammates, coaches, mentors and anyone else who has a special place in their heart for Ole Miss.
Thank you to coaches Marsha (Beasley) and JP (Lucas) for transforming the sport I've enjoyed for most of my life into a passion and source of confidence. Seeing the love you two have for the sport inspired me day in and day out to learn more about rifle and myself. Getting to know the two of you has been nothing short of a pleasure. The lessons and time spent on the line will continue to ripple throughout my life long after I graduate from the University of Mississippi.
Balancing competition and school wouldn't have been possible without the academic and life skills support Ole Miss provides. Thank you to Drew Clinton for always lending an ear and being a voice of reason for my goals in the classroom and in life. For everyone in Life Skills, especially Jennifer Saxon, thank you for making the transition from student-athlete to "real life" less daunting, and more exciting. This change in my life will be my biggest challenge thus far, but from years of working with Sport Psychologist Josie Nicholson, I am excited to continue to get to know myself and grow every day. The confidence I find in myself now as a senior took a conversation over four years.
Thank you to my parents Tom and Kathy for encouraging me to take a chance and challenge myself to do something outside of my comfort zone. Without your unfaltering support, I wouldn't have been able to weather the highs and lows that come with taking on this journey so far from home. You two have never once hesitated to encourage my interests or dreams, only given guidance and enthusiasm. I'd also like to thank my siblings Katie, Jessie, Aaron and Barbara for keeping me grounded and reminding me of who I am even when so many aspects of my life were in motion. It's really something special when we are all in the same room and can manage to turn any occasion into a celebration. It has been one of the main reasons for so many of my best memories at college, because I knew that just like at home, the only thing you really need is the people who bring light into your life to make the best memories.
Nothing can compare to the experience of stepping up to the line day in and day out with my teammates. The thousands of hours we have shared training, traveling and competing have defined me as a person, and no one will ever quite understand this journey more than you all. The memories we have shared are so unique and I'm excited for the times when we can relive them together as we cross paths throughout our lives. I have not only had teammates, but made lifelong friends.
And last but not least, thank you to Rebel Nation. This opportunity to have been welcomed into the Ole Miss family couldn't have happened without there being a family in the first place. It is quite humbling that though I will no longer have my name above a locker, that I will always be among those who love Ole Miss.
Though I am sad to no longer be a student-athlete, attending Ole Miss means I'll always be a Rebel.
Thank you,
Randi Loudin
