A Dozen Ole Miss Rifle Athletes Concluded Nationals Saturday

FORT BENNING, Ga. – A perfect dozen Ole Miss Rifle athletes wrapped up a week of intense competition at the Rifle/Pistol National Championships Saturday at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's Home of Champions, highlighted by several top-30 performances in Men's and Women's Three Positions, and Women's Prone.

Nine current Rebels competed in Georgia, along with alumni Ali Weisz and Randi Loudin, and assistant coach J.P. Lucas.

50m Women's Three Positions – June 25-26
Weisz led the event with a seventh-place finish (2317 points). She began the week winning her second career national title in Women's Air Rifle.

Junior Abby Buesseler was the highest scoring current Rebel with a mark of 2305 in the smallbore event. Her score of 1156 on day one was a 50-meter personal best. She also received the "High Collegiate" medal after finishing in the top three for college competitors.

Ole Miss had four other shooters place in the female top 30. Sophomore Erin Walsh (17th), incoming recruit Kristen Derting (19th), junior Sophia Cuozzo (21st) and senior Alana Kelly (29th) all posted personal bests for the 50-meter course of fire. Buesseler and Kelly also secured individual bests in Women's Air Rifle.

In the Junior Championships, Derting finished second in the final and fifth overall. Walsh was sixth in the final and seventh overall. Cuozzo tied on points for the last slot in the final, but didn't have as many center shots as Malori Brown.

In men's competition, assistant coach Lucas just missed the Men's Air Rifle final on June 22-23 with a ninth-place showing and 1243.0 points. He also finished 17th in Men's Three Position with 2301 points out of more than 70 competitors in each event.

50m Women's Prone – June 28-29
Weisz narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place score of 1237.3. Buesseler (14th, 1220.7), recent graduate Loudin (26th, 1207.1), and Kelly (27th, 1206.6) cracked the top 30.

Also competing for Ole Miss in the event were incoming recruit Claire O'Neel (31st) and junior Kamilla Kisch (34th).

Athletes finishing top-three in Open Olympic events earned the right to compete at World Cup Brazil, August 26-September 3, which will be the final spot to earn coveted Olympic quotas.

The majority of the Rebels will now set their sights on the 2019-2020 NCAA season, which will begin in the fall. Weisz will represent Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru beginning at the end of July.

MARSHA'S MINUTE…
Opening Statement…
"Overall, Ole Miss had a very good showing at USA Shooting Nationals. We had more folks here competing than other teams did and we had several personal bests along with two appearances in the junior women's smallbore 3x40 final. And, it was good to see Ole Miss alumna Ali Weisz win the National title in women's air rifle."

On Competing in Muggy Temperatures…
"(It was) very hot here. Smallbore is fired outside and "Realfeel" temperatures (which factor in humidity) have been over 100 degrees. The personal bests in the 50-meter event are that much more impressive considering the conditions."

On the Three Positions Junior Final…
"We were excited to see two Ole Miss shooters in the junior final. This was the first time either Erin or Kristen had made a national final. Walsh did very well in the kneeling and prone phases. She was in second going into standing."

"Derting was in third after the first two positions, 3.5 points behind first. Walsh ended up in sixth after a disappointing standing. Derting's standing phase was the best of all finalists. In the end she was just 0.2 points behind Mary Tucker (a Kentucky signee) from Colorado Springs."

On Shooting in a Prone-Only Competition…
"I wish team members had more opportunities to shoot the 60-shot prone event. With the exception of Randi Loudin, who competed for the U.S. in prone at the World Championships last September, this is actually the only 60-shot prone match any of the girls shot this past year. I think the girls who were able to stay had a good learning experience."
