Tedreauna Britt (Silver) and Brandee Presley (Bronze) Won Medals on Friday
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Ole Miss track & field freshmen Tedreauna Britt and Brandee Presley won international medals in their first time wearing a Team USA jersey at a stellar start to the Pan American U20 Outdoor Championships on Friday.
Britt – a native of St. George, South Carolina – claimed the silver medal in the women's shot put final early Friday evening, launching a 10-inch PR on her fourth attempt at 15.80m (51-10.00). The U.S. U20 runner-up is the first Rebel woman to ever medal at the Pan American U20 meet, and she is just the second Rebel in general following James Shelton's gold (4x100-meter relay) and bronze (100-meter dash) medals at the 1999 meet in Tampa.
"(Representing Team USA) is honestly amazing," Britt said. "I'm just so proud of my teammates, we've all been doing well. You've seen a lot of flags going around. I think it's just really cool to represent our country and show our talents in this wonderful sport of track and field."
In addition to her PR today improving on her spot in fifth all-time at Ole Miss, she finishes her freshman year ranked tied for 18th on the world U20 list in the shot put.
"I feel pretty good. I got another PR in, so of course I'm pretty happy about that," Britt said. "Of course, I wanted to do better, but I'm very proud."
Presley – the reigning U.S. U20 champion in the 100-meter dash and Ole Miss school record holder – took bronze in what turned out to be a highly contentious women's 100-meter dash final. After running the top prelim time earlier in the morning at a windy 11.24 (+4.9), the Oklahoma native found herself in a final that came down to three hundredths of a second for all three medalists into a strong headwind of 1.4 meters per second. Presley finished third at 11.41 seconds, just narrowly behind defending world U20 champion Briana Williams of Jamaica (11.38) and Team USA teammate Thelma Davies (11.39).
"(Representing Team USA) was a great opportunity," Presley said. "I've never been out of the country before, so it was great to see Costa Rica. And to be able to run against a world junior champion was a great experience. I just want to try and learn from her and maybe try to beat her."
Freshman Joseph Benedetto was the first Rebel in competition on Friday, finishing sixth in the men's hammer throw final at a near-PR of 66.52m (218-03) to conclude an excellent first year of competition at Ole Miss.
Competition continues for both Britt and Presley, however, as Britt will compete on Saturday in the discus at 4 p.m. CT, while Presley will run as a member of Team USA's 4x100-meter relay at 5 p.m. CT. Fellow freshman Jayda Eckford will hit the track for the first time this weekend on Saturday, running in the women's 200-meter semifinal at 6:40 p.m. CT.
