Volleyball Preps for 2019 with Red and Blue Scrimmage Thursday

The Rebels will host an open scrimmage at 5 p.m. in the Gillom Sports Center
OXFORD, Miss. --ย ย ย Just eight days out of its 2019 debut, Ole Miss Volleyball will give fans their first look at the squad Thursday at the annual Red and Blue Scrimmage held at Gillom Sports Performance Center.ย

First serve for the Rebels is scheduled at 5 p.m., with free admission. Fans are encouraged to stay late for a "Double Feature", partnering with Ole Miss Soccer with their 7 p.m. season opener.ย
ย
Ole Miss boasts a roster of 14 for the 2019 campaign, welcoming back nine letterwinners and joined by one transfer and four freshmen. Head Coach Steven McRoberts begins his sixth season at the helm.ย

The Rebels are led by two-time AVCA All-Region honoree Emily Stroup, who is coming off a record-setting junior season as an outside hitter. Joining her are fellow seniors Nicole Purcell at defensive specialist, middle blocker Nayo Warnell, and outside hitter Leah Mulkey. All four started more than half of the Rebs' 2018 matches, making significant contributions.ย

Ole Miss officially begins their slate next Friday, August 30, welcoming Rice, UCF, and Iowa State for the annual Rebel Invitational. All three squads were 2018 postseason teams, with Rice and UCF each participating in the NCAA Tournament and Iowa State taking home the NIVC crown.ย

The Rebels will also have a new look on the sidelines this season, as first-year assistant Russ Friedland officially joined the staff in early August. Friedland brings a wealth of experience, including stops at Tennessee, UNLV, and ECU. He joins the Rebels after serving as head coach of both indoor and beach volleyball at Louisiana Monroe.
