Soccer Opens 2019 with 2-0 Victory Over North Alabama

8/22/2019 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (1-0-0) controlled the ball throughout the evening on Thursday, kicking off the 2019 season with a 2-0 win over North Alabama (0-1-0) at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

Channing Foster and Mo O'Connor opened their goal scoring accounts for the year, converting two of the Rebels' 28 total shots on the nights. The Rebels peppered the UNA goal all match long, landing 13 shots on frame and forcing Lions keeper Savannah Stewart to make 11 saves.

With North Alabama sitting back, Ole Miss dominated the ball all night long. The Rebs racked up 63 percent of the possession in the fixture, spending the bulk of that time in the attacking zone.

Ole Miss very nearly took the lead right from the onset. In the fifth minute, Molly Martin played a lofted through ball and Foster held her run perfectly, setting up a one-on-one with Stewart. The Lion keeper held her ground, making a nice save with her feet for the denial.

After 25 minutes of play, Foster would be denied no longer. The junior made a darting run into the box and was taken down Hannah Guthrue for a penalty. Foster took the ball herself and converted from the spot, coolly finishing to put the Rebs in front.

Ole Miss continued to create chances but were unable to break down the North Alabama defense fully, settling for a one goal lead at the break.

The Lions continued to fend off the relentless Rebel attack until the 75th minute, when O'Connor was able to break through and put the affair all but to rest. Following up on her own shot off the post, former Oxford High School standout slid the rebound past Stewart and into the vacant net, scoring her first collegiate goal.

UNA created their best chances of the match in the closing minutes, making forward runs ahead of the advanced Ole Miss back line. The Lions best chance of the night to get on the board came in the 80th minute, but Shelby Wall's shot drifted wide of the right post.

With a win under their belts, the Rebels hit the road for the first time in 2019 on Sunday, taking on Memphis in the annual derby between the two rivals. Kickoff between Ole Miss and the Tigers is set for 7 p.m. CT, with a free stream being provided through the Memphis Tiger Network.
