89th Minute Own Goal Spells Doom for Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. – Heartbreak was dealt Sunday night in Memphis as the Ole Miss (1-1-0) was dealt a 3-1 loss to the rival Memphis Tigers, suffering a decisive own goal in the waning minutes at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex.
Despite allowing three goals, sophomore keeper Ashley Orkus was strong in goal, making a career-high seven saves, including a couple of acrobatic stops to deny the Tigers.
After a brief feeling out period to start the match, Julia Phillips pushed the Rebels in front in the 22nd minute with a tap in in front of goal. Off of a quick throw in, Channing Foster drove end line and whipped in a cross that was put off the crossbar by a Tiger defender. The ball fell kindly for Phillips and the senior buried it to give Ole Miss the lead.
The Rebel lead would last for nine minutes, with the Tigers bringing the score back level in the 31st minute. Ashley Orkus made a terrific save in front of goal from point blank range but a foul was called in the box, resulting in a penalty. Tanya Boychuk stepped up for Memphis and scored from the spot.
Ole Miss brought the energy coming out of the halftime break and in the 66th minute Memphis was brought down to 10 players. Mo O'Connor made a 1-on-1 run at Tiger goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg, who brought the Rebel freshman down just outside the 18 and was shown a straight red card.
With the advantage in numbers the Rebels pushed forward in search of the winner. Instead, Ole Miss was served a brutal blow when an own goal was turned into the Rebel goal in the 89th minute. Clarissa Larisey put the final nail in the coffin, scoring on the counter in the 90th to put things away for the Tigers.
