Rebels Upend Southeast Missouri 2-0 to Start the Rebel Classic
OXFORD, Miss. – A pair of Channing Foster goals bookended Thursday night's match at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium as the Rebels (2-1-0) defeated Southeast Missouri (1-1-0) 2-0 in Ole Miss' opening contest of the Rebel Classic.
The victory marked the 100th win at Ole Miss for head coach Matt Mott, who is in his 10th season at the helm of the Rebel program.
Foster scored early in late to lift the Rebs, who dominated every statistical category of the match. Ole Miss tested SEMO keeper Bailey Redden throughout the affair, racking up 33 shots and putting 13 on goal. On the other side, the Redhawks managed just two shots, forcing Rebel keeper Ashley Orkus to make one save.
After a 6th minute rocket from Mo O'Connor was pushed onto the crossbar to deny an early Rebel lead, Foster made mistakes with her chance just three minutes later. The junior split a pair of defenders to set up a shot on her left foot and sniped a shot into the right side of the goal to put Ole Miss on top.
That sparked a half completely owned by the Rebels, firing off 19 shots to just one attempt at goal for SEMO. Madisyn Pezzino had the best chance to extend the lead in the 35th minute, hitting a cross into the box on the volley from close range but Redden was able to get a hand to it to push it onto the post. Pezzino attempted a follow up from the ground but was unable to wrap her foot around it, sending the ball wide.
After spending the vast majority of the opening frame on the attack in the first 45 minutes, it was more of the same in the second half. Ole Miss continued to create chances in the second frame but were either thwarted by Redden or unable to apply the finishing touches time and time again.
However, in the 82nd minute Foster put the match away. A failed clearance attempt paid costly for the Redhawks as the loose ball fell to the Murray, Kentucky native with space in the box and Foster sent a laser into the upper-90 to secure her brace.
O'Connor nearly scored her second goal in as many home games late after a nifty touch sent the freshman around her defender an on the break but Redden hung in for another quality save. A couple of minutes later the final horn sounded, signifying the Rebels' second win of 2019.
Quick Kicks
