Soccer Stuns Minnesota on Little’s OT Game Winner

9/1/2019 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss showed its mettle on a hot and sticky Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium as the Rebels (3-1-0) battled back from a two-goal deficit to shock Minnesota (0-2-2) for a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory.

Ole Miss waited just about as long as it could to snag the victory, scoring the game-winner with just 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime session off the right foot of senior captain Gabby Little.

Madisyn Pezzino and Molly Martin also scored for the Rebels, who rattled off the final three scores after falling behind 2-0 within the match's first 31 minutes.

The Golden Gophers got on the board early, taking the lead in the 7th minute behind Haley Hartkmeyer's righted goal into the upper 90. Minnesota doubled its lead in the 31st minute after Megan Gray followed up her own shot off the post and slotted into the vacant goal.

With their backs against wall, the Rebels demonstrated resiliency, immediately getting back into the match on Pezzino's half volley into the bottom right corner from the top of the 18. Not only did the goal pull the Rebs back within a single score, it gave Ole Miss some momentum heading into the break.

The Rebels came out of halftime flying, chasing an equalizer. The Ole Miss pace and persistence created a handful of promising chances but as the clock began to run down it appeared time may run out on the comeback.

Instead, with just over 10 minutes remaining, Martin rose high to connect with Haleigh Stackpole's corner kick service. Martin's header had plenty of power, sending the ball into the ground, off the chest of the Gopher defender covering the far post and into the top netting of the goal for the equalizer.

With neither team able to push ahead in the final minutes of the match, proceedings were extended into overtime. Right when it seemed like the two sides would settle for a draw, Julia Phillips picked the pocket of Minnesota's Makenzie Langdok and found Little on the left side of the 18. The senior took just enough time to set herself up on her right foot and tucked the ball away from 17 yards to lift the Rebs to victory.

Winners of its last two, Ole Miss will hit the road for a pair of matches in the Bluegrass State next week, taking on Western Kentucky Thursday in Bowling Green and Murray State Sunday in Murray. Thursday's match will be available via YouTube through the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network, while Sunday's affair will be streamed via ESPN+.

Quick Kicks
• The dramatic golden goal was the latest game winner for Ole Miss since 2015, when Maddie Friedmann beat the buzzer with 1 second to go in the 110th minute at Arkansas in 2015.
• The Rebels avenged a double-overtime loss to the Golden Gophers last season. In that match, Megan Gray scored the game-winner for Minnesota in the 109th minute.
• Ole Miss outshot the Golden Gophers 25-16, including 21-6 after the halftime break. The Rebels also won the corner kick battle 13-6, earning 12 after the half.
• Rebel keeper Ashley Orkus continues to be a strong presence in goal, registering five saves against the Golden Gophers.
• Little's overtime goal was the fifth score of the senior's career and the first since 9/9/18 against Florida Atlantic, also a late game-winner.
• Martin's game-tying goal was her first of the season and fifth of her career. It was the junior's first goal since heading in the only score of Ole Miss' win at Alabama last season.
• Pezzino's goal was also her first of the season and fourth as a Rebel after scoring a pair as a freshman at Florida State. It was the New York native's first score since 9/7/18 against UConn.
