Foster’s Penalty Kick Conversion Gives Ole Miss Road Victory
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For the second-straight match Ole Miss (4-1-0) needed extra time to pull out a victory, defeating WKU (2-2-1) in 1-0 in double overtime behind Channing Foster's penalty kick in the 108th minute.
Ole Miss best chance to score in the first half came shortly after kickoff, when Sophie Dineen and Haleigh Stackpole played a give-and-go to create some space on the left wing in the third minute. Dineen sent in a well weighted cross that found Molly Martin's head in the box but the junior's attempt to redirect on goal went just wide.
The Rebel pressure continued to give WKU problems in the midfield, leading to a number of Hilltopper turnovers but the Rebels weren't able to connect the final ball, settling for a 0-0 score at the halftime break.
The Rebels came out of the halftime break with renewed energy and dominated the vast majority of the 45 minutes. Ole Miss outshot WKU 9-4 in the second half, while also earning eight corners. However, the Rebels were unable to put any of their chances away, heading into overtime for the second-straight match.
Ole Miss continued to control the pace of play throughout overtime and in the second 10 minute period it paid off as WKU was called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Channing Foster stepped to the spot and calmly finished, sending her teammates onto the pitch to celebrate.
Ole Miss remains on the road in Kentucky, heading to Murray to face Murray State on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
