Soccer Wins Wild Shootout in Murray, 5-4
9/8/2019 | Soccer
Rebels Battle Back from 2-0 Deficit, Overcome Racers in the Second Half
Julia Phillips recorded the first brace of her career, twice bringing the score level with clutch finishes. Channing Foster, Madisyn Pezzino and Haleigh Stackpole also found the back of the net, while Pezzino and Molly Martin netted assists.
Things got off to a bumpy start for the Rebels as Emma Heise gave Murray State a lead less than three minutes in and Miyah Watford doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute.
However, the Rebels battled right back from the adversity, with Sophie Dineen being taken down in the box just 33 seconds after play was resumed and Foster converting from the spot to cut the deficit in half.
Pezzino's 29th minute snipe to the bottom corner tied the game but just under a minute later, Watford regained the lead for the Racers, following her own shot after an Ashley Orkus save. The Rebs would have the last laugh of the half, though, as Phillips grabbed hold of Martin's rebound and tucked her shot into the bottom corner to put the score all square at three heading into the break.
While Ole Miss controlled possession for much of the second half, there was plenty of fireworks on both sides of the field.
The Racers struck first in the 57th minute as Abby Jones converted from the penalty spot. That lead, however, wouldn't last long.
The Rebels came right back with an equalizer in the 61st minute from the corner flag, with Pezzino's service finding Phillips, who needed just a slight touch of the head to redirect on frame. Just over two minutes later, Pezzino was fouled in the box and Stackpole scored the penalty to give Ole Miss its first lead of the afternoon.
From there, the Rebels were able to salt away the remaining time, pulling out a wild 5-4 win in Murray.
The Rebels will hit the road once again for their next contest, taking on Long Beach State on Thursday in a neutral site game on the campus of SMU in Dallas.
