Three Rebels Score, Foster Enters Top-10 Scoring List
DALLAS, Texas – Ole Miss took the lead less than two minutes in and never looked back, defeating Long Beach State 3-0 at Westcott Field Thursday afternoon.
The Rebels (6-1-0) took the lead right from the jump, scoring in the second minute. Ole Miss took advantage of an LBSU (2-4-0) miscue in the back, with Sophie Dineen finding Haleigh Stackpole in the middle of the 18-yard box for a clinical finish.
Ole Miss needed some heroics from Ashley Orkus to preserve the lead in the 25th minute. A screaming shot from LBSU's Kayla Cannon seemed destined for top bins but Orkus layed out to get a hand on it, deflecting the ball onto the crossbar and out.
Both teams created a few half chances with the remaining time in the half but neither could fully break down the other's defense, sending the match into the break with the Rebels up 1-0.
With the next goal pivotal, the Rebels doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half. Molly Martin used a cutting pass to find Channing Foster all alone in the box and the Rebel striker made no mistakes, slotting her shot into the bottom corner.
Foster nearly added another a couple of minutes later but a fine save from Marta Alemany Sanchez denied her a second brace in 2019.
However, the Rebs would get their third in the 72nd minute, with Madisyn Pezzino's corner delivery finding Julia Phillips for a header into the top right corner of the goal.
LBSU had a chance to pull one back with 15 minutes remaining after Orkus was called for a foul in the box for a penalty. Instead, the Rebel keeper atoned for the mistake with a clutch save on Mackenzie Magaoay's attempt from the spot.
The Rebels continued to create chances until the very last minute but the three goals of offense were more than enough to earn a quality win away from home.
Ole Miss will return to Oxford for the first time in two weeks on Sunday, taking on South Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
