Volleyball Position Preview: Outside Hitters

OXFORD, Miss. --ย ย ย In the first of a three-part series, OleMissSports.com takes a look at the Rebel volleyball's depth chart ahead of Friday's season opener in the Gillom Athletics Performance Center, where Ole Miss hosts Rice, Iowa State, and UCF in the annual Rebel Invitational.ย

The squad's deepest position, outside hitters, is led by Rebel standout Emily Stroup, who returns to Oxford for her final campaign. She is joined by four other hitters, bringing solid depth to the position that can play both pins in various situations.ย

After back-to-back AVCA All-Region seasons and earning All-SEC last season, Stroup will look to continue her dominance as a six-rotation player for the Rebs. Stroup finished second in the country last year with 584 kills, breaking the program single-season record, while also shattering the single-match kills record in three separate contests.

Also returning for the Rebels are senior Leah Mulkey and sophomore Lauren Thompson. Mulkey started in 23 matches last year for the Rebels, ranking third on the squad with 223 kills and will once again compete for a starting spot. Thompson appeared in eight matches as a true freshman and looks to fight for a bigger role this season.ย

New to the red and navy are junior transfer Izzy Guzik and freshman Anna Bair. Guzik joins the Rebels after two seasons at the University of Portland, posting 328 kills and 278 digs during her sophomore campaign. Bair collected 1,323 kills during her four seasons at Ursuline Academy in St. Louis, Mo., where she led the region in kills as both a junior and senior.ย
