OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Volleyball opened its 2019 campaign Friday at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center, falling to 2018 NCAA Tournament participant (RV) Rice in a sweep (21-25, 22-25, 21-25) on the first night of the Rebel Invitational.
Senior Emily Stroup picked up her first of likely many double-digit kill performances, slamming 11 while adding eight digs and an ace. Junior Lauren Bars dished out 24 assists en route to her first double-double of the year, registering 15 digs.
Freshman outside Anna Bair delivered a strong debut, tallying eight kills, while sophomore Lauren Thompson contributed five digs, a pair of blocks, and added three kills. Senior Nicole Purcell donned the libero jersey, pulling in 16 digs.
The Rebels opened the season on a 4-0 run in the opening stanza, all coming from Rice attack errors. An 8-4 lead was halted after four consecutive Owl points, equalizing points before a cat-and-mouse affair ensued. Back-to-back kills from Stroup put the Rebels briefly back in control at 14-13 before Rice used a trio of three-point runs to build momentum and steal the set, 25-21.
Neither side really exploded during the second set, as the back-and-forth endured until the 12-10 mark, when Bars and Stroup supplied the Rebels with four straight points to take the lead at 13-12. After a Stroup kill placed Ole Miss within one, Rice picked up back-to-back-to-back points to add cushion at 24-20. Another Stroup kill and a block from Thompson and senior Nayo Warnell trimmed the deficit to 24-22, but the Owls prevailed to take a 2-0 advantage in the contest.
After trading the first few points of the third frame, Ole Miss used a trio of attackers to set up a rally, as Stroup, Bair, and senior Leah Mulkey all tallied slams in the 5-0 run to build their biggest lead of the match at 9-4. Despite sequences of three and four straight points each from Rice, the Rebels stayed in within a close margin late in the game. A kill from sophomore middle blocker Aubrey Sultemeier put the Rebs in a threatening position at 21-22 until three unanswered from the Owls shifted the momentum again and handed Rice the sweep with a 25-21 third set.
Ole Miss returns for Day 2 of the Rebel Invite Saturday, hosting 2018 NIVC Champions Iowa State at 12:30 p.m.
