Rebels Excel in Season Openers at Alabama, Vanderbilt on Friday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Rebel quartet in Tuscaloosa delivered a perfect record in singles action, as senior Tim Sandkaulen, sophomores Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk, and freshman Lukas Engelhardt all triumphed in the first round at the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall Championships on Friday.
The pairs of Engelhardt and Sandkaulen and Junk and Hain teamed up in doubles, each posting 1-1 ledgers on the day.
In singles, Sandkaulen grinded through a three-setter over conference opponent Erik Grevelius of Georgia (6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5), while Engelhardt prevailed in a three-set contest of his own over Max Stewart of Oklahoma (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) for his first collegiate victory.
Junk and Hain each won in two, and the pair picked up their sixth career win as a duo in the first round of doubles action, as Junk bested South Alabama's Sebastien Collard in both matchups.
Engelhardt and Sandkaulen fell in their opening doubles draw, again falling to conference foes. This time it was Tennessee's Jordan Chrysostom and Martim Prata who edged the Rebs 8-6. Engelhardt and Sandkaulen found redemption, winning 8-6 in their second matchup of the day.
Day 2 in Tuscaloosa begins with singles play on Saturday at 9 a.m. Doubles will resume again Sunday.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Like their teammates in Tuscaloosa, the trio of Rebels dispatched to the Commodore Scramble in Nashville also prevailed in singles action and split their doubles results 1-1 each.
Junior Cotter Wilson paired with rookie Nikola Slavic in doubles, as the duo outlasted conference foes Michael Durham and Spencer Gray of Auburn in a 7-3 tiebreak. Sophomore Sebastian Rios teamed with Belmont junior Grant Kelly to prevail in their own tiebreaker 10-8 over Tennessee Tech's Elias Grubert and Carlos Vicente.
Each grouping dropped their second-round matchup, but the Rebel threesome each picked up victories in singles to finish the day in strong fashion.
Wilson defeated Tennessee Tech's Rafael Tosetto 6-4, 6-2, while Slavic secured his first win as a Rebel with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lipscomb's Jorge Ortegon. Rios was also successful over the Bisons as the trio wrapped Day 1.
Things begin on Day 2 in Nashville with doubles action at 9 a.m. on Saturday, followed by two rounds of singles play.
