Rebels head to Auburn, Ala., to begin their fall campaign
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Women's Tennis begins its 2019 fall debut this weekend, traveling to league foe Auburn for the annual Marliss Gruver Fall Invitational.
Named after the Tigers' former director of operations who lost her battle with melanoma in 2017, the Marliss Gruver Fall Invitational will put the Rebels against competition from Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Yale, and of course, Auburn.
After standout 2019 springs, seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova return for their final seasons. Vrbenska has tallied just four losses in SEC play in three seasons, while Janatova boasted a team-best 24 wins last school year, including an 8-1 league record. They're joined by classmate Alexa Bortles, a 2018 All-American.
Junior Sabina Machalova also returns after holding steady at first singles all spring, boasting five wins over ranked opposition in last season. After a strong rookie debut before being sidelined in the spring due to injury, sophomore Isolde de Jong will also compete, as well as Oxford native Grace Anne Jones, who will make her first collegiate appearance as an Ole Miss Rebel. Also making her Rebel debut is freshman Victoire de Samucewicz, hailing from Paris, France.
Machalova and Bortles made headlines earlier this week, earning a No. 17 ranking in doubles in the ITA Preseason Rankings. Machalova also carries a No. 58 ranking in singles.
Draws can be found in the links provided, with the tentative tournament structure to be set up as two 16-player single flights (four rounds) and two eight-team draws of doubles (three rounds).
