Soccer Opens SEC Slate with 1-1 Draw Against Missouri

9/20/2019 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – On a night where victory seemed mere inches away on a myriad of occasions, Ole Miss settled for a 1-1 draw in its SEC opener against Missouri Friday night behind Molly Martin's first half goal.

The Rebels (6-2-1, 0-0-1) played with high energy throughout the 110 minutes played at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, registering a 29-18 shot advantage over the Tigers (6-2-1, 0-0-1). On the other end, Ashley Orkus again proved a strong presence in goal, making five stops on the night.

The woodwork was a friend for the Tigers throughout the match as the Rebels were denied by the goal frame on seven different occasions. Nonetheless the Rebels still finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal.

The opening 45 minutes featured about as much back-and-forth action as anyone could ask for. However, despite numerous quality looks from both sides the ball one way or another found a way to stay out of the goal mouth.

Just when it looked like the Rebels and Tigers would have to settle for a scoreless tie at the break, Martin broke through to give the Rebs a halftime lead. Taking a feed from Channing Foster, the junior went five-hole on her defender in the box and tucked her shot inside the right corner, giving Ole Miss the lead with just 30 ticks left on the clock.

Ole Miss nearly doubled its lead in the opening minutes of the second stanza as Maddy Houghton had a go from long range and had her shot take a deflection that deceived Tiger keeper Peyton Bauman. However, the woodwork was again unkind with the ball hitting the crossbar and going out for a corner.

Madisyn Pezzino came within inches of scoring her second goal in as many matches and adding an insurance goal but the right post came to the aid of Missouri, keeping the Rebel lead Foster had a look within the 18 off the rebound but couldn't beat Bauman.

About 12 minutes after a Haleigh Stackpole goal line clearance preserved the Rebel lead, Missouri leveled in the 77th minute, with Blythe Beldner finishing from close range on a bouncing ball in the box.

The Rebs created a few chances in the closing minutes but with the score remaining tied at 1-1 after the full 90, the match extended into overtime.

Five minutes into the first overtime period, it looked as though Foster may have scored the golden goal but it was ruled that the Tigers were able to clear before the ball fully crossed the line. With video review not used in league play, the match continued despite replay showing the ball likely crossing by mere inches.

Quickly jumping on the counter, Missouri's Lindsey Whitmore found herself all alone with Orkus. The Rebel keeper went low and Whitmore attempted to fire over the top of her but the Vestavia Hills, Alabama native was up to the task, making a clutch catch to thwart the possible winner.

In the second period of overtime, the Rebels once again were on the front foot and had the best looks at goal. Probably the best look all night, in the 102nd minute Mo O'Connor and Martin had a 2-on-1 with Bauman but a heavy touch from the freshman allowed a charging Bauman to eat up the space and make a sliding save to send the ball out for a corner.
Foster also nearly earned the three points for the Rebels in the 107th minute, sending a bending ball towards the far corner that for the seventh time in the match hit the frame of the goal and caromed over for a goal kick. A few minutes later the clock hit zeroes and both teams finished with a point in the standings.

The Rebels will return to action in just under a week, taking on Mississippi State in Starkville on Thursday. Ole Miss is looking to extend its record streak of five seasons in possession of the Magnolia Cup, taking on the Bulldogs at 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

Quick Kicks
