Soccer Keeps Magnolia Cup with 1-1 Draw at Mississippi State

9/26/2019 | Soccer

Rebel’s Record Streak of Trophy Possession Extended to Six Games

STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the sixth-straight season, the Magnolia Cup is heading back where it belongs in Oxford. However, just one point will be joining the rivalry trophy after Ole Miss and Mississippi State settled for a 1-1 tie Thursday night.

While Ole Miss (6-2-2, 0-0-2) controlled the majority of possession and the Bulldogs (5-4-1, 0-1-1) opted to settle back defensively and attempt to strike on the counter, the stats ended fairly evenly. The two teams matched each other with 13 shots, though Ole Miss led with four on goal compared to just two for MSU.

Julia Phillips nearly had the Rebels up less than three minutes after the opening kick, having her header from close range clang off the crossbar. Instead, it was Haleigh Stackpole pushing Ole Miss ahead in the 18th minute. A failed clearance by the Bulldog defense left Stackpole all alone in the center of the box and the sophomore blasted a shot into the right side of the frame.

Ole Miss continued to push for a second and in the 27th minute nearly got it as Channing Foster laid off to Madisyn Pezzino inside the 18. However, a hustle play from State defender Niejia Watkins saved MSU, blocking Pezzino's strike.

Just a handful of minutes later the match was tied as the Rebels failed to clear a bouncing ball in the box and MaKayla Waldner toe poked the ball past a charging Ashley Orkus to deadlock the score.

Neither team was able to separate itself in the following 10 minutes, taking the game into the break knotted at a goal apiece.

Following halftime, action was at a premium though out the early parts of the second half. However, with about 20 minutes to play, Ole Miss began to put its foot on the gas and create few chances.

In the 63rd minute, Foster had perhaps the best look of either side in the second stanza, collecting a loose ball at the top of the box and sending her shot wide of the open left side of the goal. In the 75th, Lonnie Mulligan cut in from the right wing and sent a wicked cross through the box. However, MSU was first to react, clearing to avert danger.

Neither team was able to break through before the clock hit zeroes, extending the rivalry matchup into overtime.

After a relatively quiet first overtime session, Mulligan came within inches of earning the full three points for Ole Miss, sending a blazing shot from the right side of the box just wide of the far post in the 109th minute. Instead, the Rebs earned a quality point on the road and earned the right to bring the Magnolia Cup back home on the team bus.

With two points in the league table, Ole Miss returns home to Oxford on Sunday, battling Auburn at 2 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The game will be available for streaming via SEC Network +.

Quick Kicks
• Ole Miss' record streak of years maintaining control of the Magnolia Cup is extended to six. During that time, the Rebels are 4-0-2 against the Bulldogs.
Haleigh Stackpole's 18th minute strike was her third of the season, joining Madisyn Pezzino in a tie for third most on the team.
• Stackpole remains the only field player on the Ole Miss roster to play every second of the 2019 season.
Madisyn Pezzino led the Rebels with four shots in the match, one on goal. No other Rebel recorded more than a pair of attempts at goal.
