QUICK KICKS
• Ole Miss is coming off of a 1-1 draw against Mississippi State Thursday night in Starkville. With the tie, Ole Miss retained the Magnolia Cup, extending its record streak to six years of trophy possession.
• The Rebels have tied each of their first two SEC matches in 2019 and currently sit fourth in the SEC West table with a pair of points.
• Haleigh Stackpole scored Ole Miss' lone goal of the rivalry matchup. Stackpole has scored in three of the past five games for the Rebels. In 32 career matches, the sophomore has scored eight times and six of those goals have been game-winners.
• Channing Foster has scored in five of Ole Miss' 10 games in 2019, totaling a team-high six goals in all. The junior is tied with four other players for fourth in the SEC in scoring this season. Foster also leads the league and ranks eighth in the nation with 5.00 shots per game.
• Julia Phillips ranks second on the team with four goals. The senior scored just three times in her previous three seasons combined. Madisyn Pezzino and Stackpole are the only other Rebel with at least three scores, all coming in the last seven matches.
• Ashley Orkus ranks third in the SEC with 45 total saves this season. The sophomore keeper's .776 save percentage is good for seventh in the conference.
• Auburn comes to Oxford with a win in each of its first two SEC matches. The Tigers are 3-3-2 in non-conference play.
• The Tigers haven't won in Oxford since 2011, a tight 3-2 loss for Ole Miss. Ole Miss is 7-3-1 all-time when facing Auburn at home.
SCOUTING AUBURN
Auburn is in its 21st season under head coach Karen Hoppa, who took over the Tiger program in 1999. Hoppa, a 27-year coaching veteran, is one of 28 head coaches and just eight female head coaches to amass more than 300 wins in her career, entering Sunday's clash with a 306-200-50 overall record. During Hoppa's tenure Auburn has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, winning one SEC regular season and one SEC Tournament title as well.
The Tigers currently sit at 5-3-2 in 2019, riding high after winning each of their first two games in SEC play at Kentucky and against Tennessee in Auburn. Outside of league play Auburn in .500 in non-conference action, tying each of their last two non-con games to Samford and Old Dominion. Of the Tigers' five wins this season, three have come at home, with Auburn posting a 1-1-1 road record and a 1-1-0 mark in neutral site matches.
Auburn is led in scoring by two-time All-American and First Team All-SEC performer Bri Folds, who has recorded five goals and a pair of assists to pace the Tigers with 12 points in 2019. Freshman forward Sydney Richards and junior defender Sarah Houchin have each bagged three goals this season, while sophomore midfielder/forward Hailey Whitaker and senior forward Jessie Gerow have also scored multiple goals. Graduate student keeper Kate Hart, who transferred to Auburn after four seasons at San Diego State, has played every second between the posts for the Tigers, registering a 1.04 GAA with a .738 save percentage and five shutouts.
SERIES HISTORY - AUBURN
Ole Miss holds a narrow 12-11-2 advantage in the all-time series with Auburn following last season's 3-2 Rebel victory on The Plains. After a series of swings for both teams highlighted the early parts of the series, the matchups have been much more back-and-forth as of late, with neither team posting consecutive victories since the Tigers took two straight in 2011 and 2012. Ole Miss has not lost to the Tigers since that meeting in Auburn in 2012, winning three times and drawing twice.
LAST MEETING - AUBURN (9/23/18)
AUBURN, Ala. - Behind a second half clinic from then-senior CeCe Kizer, Ole Miss went onto The Plains and brought a top-10 victory back home to Oxford, defeating No. 9 Auburn 3-2 the AU Soccer Complex.
It was a memorable day for Kizer for more reasons than just her performance, as the Overland Park, Kansas native broke a pair of program records in leading the Rebs to victory. Kizer notched a brace and in doing so set the new program marks for both goals and assists in a career.
The bulk of the action in the first half came in the span of less than two minutes, as Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the 36th-minute on a far post shot by Jessie Gerow and the Rebels answered back in the 38th-minute on Channing Foster's equally well-placed far post attempt.
Tied at the break, Kizer changed that quickly coming out of halftime, making a cutting run from midfield and firing a shot past Tiger keeper Sarah Le Beau not even a minute into the half. It was the 45th goal of her career, breaking Rafaelle Souza's Ole Miss record.
However, the lead didn't last long. Julia Phillips was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a 51st-minute penalty. Bri Folds converted for Auburn, going left to beat Marnie Merritt and bring the score level once again.
Kizer would have the last laugh, though. Having just come off the bench with fresh legs, the senior made quite possibly the greatest run of her career. Receiving the ball behind the midfield stripe, Kizer darted past a myriad of Tiger defenders before slotting past Le Beau, scoring her 13th game-winner in an Ole Miss kit.
MOTT AND HOPPA REUNITED
While every SEC match carries a lot of wait, Ole Miss' matchups with Auburn always hold a special place in the heart of Rebel head coach Matt Mott, who spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach on Karen Hoppa's staff, including six at Auburn. Since coming to Ole Miss in 2010, Mott has enjoyed quite a bit of success against his mentor, posting a 4-2-2 record against the Tigers.
IRON WOMAN
Since beginning her collegiate career a season ago, Haleigh Stackpole has been an absolute fixture in the Rebel lineup. The Fort Bragg, North Carolina native has started all 32 matches over the past two seasons while almost never coming off the pitch despite consistently totaling the highest distance travelled as a box-to-box midfielder. Stackpole ranked second on the team during her freshman campaign with 1850 total minutes, just over 84 per match. This season, Stackpole is joined only by Rebel keeper Ashley Orkus in playing every second of the Rebels' 977 minutes of game time.
PHILLIPS JOINS THE ATTACK
Senior captain Julia Phillips has seen an uptick in her involvement on the offensive side of the pitch in 2019, ranking second on the team with four goals this season. Phillips has found the back of the net three times this season, as many goals as she had scored in her first 45 collegiate contests combined. The Rebel midfielder has been extremely efficient with her offense, needing just 13 shots to record her four goals, putting six attempts on frame.
PAIR OF REBS HEATING UP
Nearing consideration for the term "super sub", junior attacker Madisyn Pezzino has been in excellent form for Ole Miss as of late. The former Florida State Seminole has scored three times in the past seven matches and has registered at least a point in three of the last four. With the recent run, Pezzino has moved into third place on the roster with nine points, registering three goals and a pair of assists.
Meanwhile, a resent run of scoring form has also vaulted Haleigh Stackpole into a tie with Pezzino with three goals for third most on the team. After scoring Ole Miss' lone goal against Mississippi State, Stackpole has now scored in three of the last five matches.
FOSTER ENTERS TOP 10
Not even midway through her junior season, striker Channing Foster is already one of the most prolific scorers in Ole Miss history. The Murray, Kentucky native scored for the third straight game in the 3-0 victory over Long Beach State, giving her six goals for the season and 26 in her career, tying her for 10th most on Ole Miss' all-time career scoring list. At her current pace, Foster will have a shot to topple CeCe Kizer's record of 48 career goals, set just last season.
CORNERS GALORE
If there is one area of the game Ole Miss has particularly excelled at in 2019, it would have to be creating opportunities from the corner flags. The Rebels rank second in the nation with 8.60 corners per game, four times registering double digit corners. The chances have paid off, with the Rebs scoring three times directly from a corner kick service. Ole Miss has also excelled on the defensive side of the field during corner delivering. Rebel opponents have taken 50 total corners this season, with none of those chances resulting in goals.
MAGNOLIA CUP STAYS HOME IN OXFORD
For the sixth-consecutive season, the Magnolia Cup is staying right where it belongs in Oxford. The annual trophy exchanged between Magnolia State rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State returned north Thursday night following the 1-1 draw between the Rebels and the Bulldogs. Haleigh Stackpole scored what turned out to be Ole Miss' lone goal of the night in the 18th minute before MaKayla Waldner equalized for MSU in the 35th. Both teams had chances to claim the trophy outright but with neither side able to provide a winner, the rivalry trophy returned to the previous holder, Ole Miss.
