Rebels pick up victory in final nonconference action
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A gritty four-set thriller handed Ole Miss Volleyball (8-3) their eighth consecutive win, as the Rebels rallied from down a set to defeat American (22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 27-25) in Bender Arena in our nation's capital.
Senior Emily Stroup chiseled her way closer to the all-time kills record, tallying a squad-best 16. Freshman Anna Bair added 12, while the middle blocker duo of sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier and senior Nayo Warnell added nine and seven, respectively. Warnell also posted six rejections.
American came out of the gate with momentum, taking an early four-point lead at 9-5. With the Rebels still trailing by two at the media timeout, an American miscue, followed by a block by the duo of Lauren Bars and Sultemeier even the contest. Sultemeier then put the Rebs in control with a kill, but the lead was short lived as the Eagles used a trio of kills with an ace and a block to regain the lead and build a cushion that Ole Miss was unable to overcome, dropping the opening stanza 25-18.
The Ole Miss attackers came out firing in round two, building a four-point advantage on slams from Bair and Stroup. Leading by six points at 11-5, American replied with three unanswered and looked to trim the deficit even more until a kill by Sultemeier quieted the Eagles, if only briefly.
American continued to pressure, coming within one point at the 17-16, 18-17, and 19-18 marks. A quick tip over from the Eagles' setter evened things at 19, who then took control of the set.
Things got tricky as the frame continued, as a block by Warnell was challenged by American. The call was overturned, only to then be challenged again by Ole Miss. The overturned call was then reversed, giving the Rebels the point and tying things at 23.
The teams were forced to extra points after a kill by Stroup brought the score to a stalemate at 24. Warnell then followed up with her first ace of the season to put Ole Miss at set point, and Stroup delivered another timely kill to even the contest at one set each after a 26-24 score.
Ole Miss held a steady advantage to open Set 3, leading by as many as six points. American responded, tallying five of the next six points, to narrow the gap to a 14-12 Rebel advantage. Ole Miss fired back, registering three unanswered of their own off a block from the senior duo of Warnell and Leah Mulkey, and kills from Warnell and junior setter Lauren Bars.
In similar fashion to the second set, Stroup began to sprinkle in slams, putting Ole Miss up by five at 20-15. The Eagles began to chip away once more, until an ace from junior Izzy Guzik brought the Rebels to a 24-18 set point, and an American service error handed Ole Miss a 2-1 match lead at 25-20.
The contest turned into a cat-and-mouse affair in Set 4, as the Rebels were only able to put more than two points together once, but still able to build a lead at 10-7. The Eagles capitalized on a pair of Rebel attack errors to tie things at 10 all, and endured nine ties through the 15-point mark.
The pattern continued throughout the frame, as the squads grinded through 17 total ties, forcing extra points for the second set of the match. Just like the second set, Stroup delivered the game-tying kill at 25-25, and the Rebels put up match point after a slam from Mulkey.
An American attack error delivered the Ole Miss victory at 27-25, handing them their eighth win in a row.
