Andrea Lignell has Lead at 8-Under After 36 Holes
WOLCOTT, Colo. – The Ole Miss women's golf team is alone in first place after 36 holes at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Rebels separated themselves from the field on moving day, firing an 8-under 280 on Tuesday, the fifth-lowest single-round score in program history. Ole Miss is 15-under after the two rounds (281-280—561) and is 12 shots clear of second place Denver, who is at 3-under.
Ole Miss has been playing very consistent golf and is second in the field in birdies (37) and pars (108). The Rebels are the only team who have gone under par on both the par 5s (-4) and par 4s (-1).
"We played really smart golf today. Our course management couldn't have been better," head coach Kory Henkes said. "The pins today were very tight and we hit it in the right spots for birdie opportunities. If we missed them, it was a tap in for par and move on to the next hole."
Freshman Andrea Lignell is the 36-hole leader after a second round 5-under 67, a new career-low after opening up with a 3-under 69 Monday. The 67 ties the best round ever shot by an Ole Miss freshman set by current junior Julia Johnson (2018 San Francisco Regional) and Natalie Gleadall (2010 Cougar Classic).
Through the first two rounds, Lignell has carded 10 birdies, 24 pars and just two bogeys. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native has gone under par on the par 5s (-2), par 4s (-4) and par 3s (-2). Lignell went 4-under on the back Tuesday, including a birdie on No. 14, which saw only three players in the field of 96 make birdie on Tuesday.
"I'm super proud of Andrea," Henkes said. "She's been playing very good golf this week. She's playing smart, which has given her a lot of opportunities for birdie, that's turned into back-to-back career rounds."
Fellow Swede Pi-Lillebi Hermansson joins Lignell in the top-5 individually. The senior shot a 4-under 68 to move eight spots up into a tie for third. A tap in eagle after driving the green on the par 4 fourth hole erased two bogeys early, and Hermansson played the rest of the way bogey-free with four birdies.
"I'm really proud of Pi for putting together back-to-back rounds like she has," Henkes said. "She's been playing really good golf lately and it's showing by her scores."
Julia Johnson is tied for 11th after an even par 72 second round. The junior is second on the team with nine birdies and has shot par or better in every round this season.
Senior Kennedy Swann shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday and remains in the top-20 overall. Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, playing as an individual, matched Swann's moving day score, and sits tie for 17th individually.
Final round is set for Wednesday morning with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with Denver, San Diego State and Pepperdine.
