First of Four Olympic Trial Qualifiers Runs Oct. 1-2
OXFORD, Miss. – After an extremely successful Pan Americans Games for the USA Shooting Team highlighted by Rebel alum Ali Weisz' Women's Air Rifle Gold Medal, shooters from across the country set their sights on the first of four Olympic Trial Qualifiers, Oct. 1-2 in Fort Benning, Georgia. The 2019 Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore Part I is up first and will be contested at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's Home of Champions.
Five current Rebel rifle student-athletes (juniors Abby Buesseler, Kamilla Kisch, sophomores Erin Walsh, Jillian Zakrzeski, and freshman Kristen Derting) will compete alongside 2017 Ole Miss graduate Weisz. Scores from next week's qualifier will be added together with scores from the Olympic Team Trials Part II, which will be held in March.
After an impressive showing by USA Shooting at the Pan American Games in July, the number of athletes the squad can now take to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for rifle is eight. The rifle team will consist of the top two for both smallbore and air rifle, and top two per each gender. The Olympics will feature men's, women's, and mixed team competitions in 50-meter smallbore and 10-meter air rifle.
Ole Miss is no stranger to success in smallbore in recent years. Weisz qualified for 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships in the event, and Zakrzeski fired a 584 at the NCAA Qualifier falling two points shy of reaching the 2019 competition.
The 2019 Winter Airgun Championships will serve as this year's Olympic Team Trials for Air Rifle in December. This Part I event will also add scores with Part II, which will be contested in February.
