Kendricks is the Defending World Champion from 2017

DOHA, QATAR – Rebel Olympian and reigning world champion Sam Kendricks advanced to the men's pole vault final after a smooth qualifying round at the IAAF World Championships on Saturday.

Kendricks, an Oxford native who won Olympic bronze in 2016, was flawless on Saturday, standing as one of just two on the day to remain clean through the automatic qualifying height of 5.75m (18-10.25). He now will look to defend his world title from 2017 in the final, which is scheduled for Tues., Oct. 1 at 12:05 p.m. CT and will air live on NBC Sports Network.

The nine-time U.S. champion is in the midst of the greatest season of his career, highlighted by an astonishing win at the USA Outdoor Championships in July. In his record sixth consecutive U.S. outdoor title, Kendricks cleared a new American record height of 6.06m (19-10.50), the second-best in world history outdoors behind Sergey Bubka's 1994 outdoor world record of 6.14m (20-01.75).

Rebel All-American Brian Williams also competed on Saturday, finishing 27th overall in the men's discus qualifying at 60.48m (198-05). This was the first career trip to the World Championships for Williams, who won his first U.S. medal this summer after taking silver at the USA Outdoor Championships.
