Sandkaulen Claims First Collegiate Tourney Title at Ragin’ Cajun Classic

The senior is ranked No. 25 in the ITA Preseason Rankings
LAFAYETTE, La. -- After splitting the first two sets and nearly a half-hour rain delay, Ole Miss Men's Tennis' Tim Sandkaulen was victorious, claiming the John Breakun Ragin' Cajun Tennis Classic title Sunday at the Cajun Courts on the campus of Louisiana Lafayette.
The senior from Monchengladbach, Germany, faced Arizona State's Makey Rakotomala, triumphing 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. Despite earning a spot in several finals over his four-year career, this marks the first collegiate tournament title for Sandkaulen.
The top seed in the tournament field, Sandkaulen built some early cushion, going up 5-2 in the opening stanza and taking a 6-3 advantage into the second set.
The match looked to be a swift decision for the Rebels, as Sandkaulen led 5-2 before Rakotomala rallied to take five straight games and even things at one set apiece.
Sandkaulen regained momentum, taking the upper hand early. Up 4-1, he was attempted to hold serve with a 15-0 ledger when play was halted due to weather. It was resumed around 2:30 p.m., when Sandkaulen cruised through the final two games.
AT THE NET WITH… ASSISTANT COACH DEVIN BRITTON
"It was a great tournament all around for Tim. He played in this event his freshman year and lost in the first round. It is really rewarding to be able to see how far he has come since then. Mentally he was locked in from the first point of the tournament to the last. He definitely showed why he is one of the best players in college tennis.
More importantly, he represented himself and the Ole Miss family well this week. I am really happy for him to be able to take home his first collegiate title."
SANDKAULEN SOUND BITES
"I'm really happy about the way I handled myself this week. I beat some tough players and got some great matches under my belt in preparation for the All-American [held in October]! I'm really excited that I got my first college title after being in the finals so many times."
