Ole Miss Sweeps Second Straight on Day 2 in Big Easy
9/7/2019 | Volleyball
The Rebels limited Missouri State to an .041 hitting percentage through three sets
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Limiting their opponent to an-under .100 hitting efficiency for the second consecutive contest, Ole Miss Volleyball (2-3) picked up their second-straight sweep Saturday on Day 2 of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic, taking down Missouri State (2-4) in commanding fashion (25-14, 25-20, 25-10).
Senior Leah Mulkey, in her first start of the season, replaced her day-old career high, posting a stellar .636 hitting percentage as she finished with seven kills and added three blocks. The Rebels tallied 10 total rejections at the net, as sophomore middle Aubrey Sultemeier registered five, senior Nayo Warnell and freshman Anna Bair each denied four, and setter Lauren Bars added two.
Bair continued with her dynamic debut, tallying seven kills with no attack errors for a .368 efficiency. Senior Emily Stroup paced the squad with 11 kills, and fellow veteran Nicole Purcell contributed a team-high 11 digs.
The Rebels maintained a steady lead for most of the opening stanza, riding a 10-3 run to hold an overwhelming 10-point advantage at multiple marks late in the set. Ole Miss concluded in dominant fashion, securing a 1-0 lead with a 25-14 finish. Leading the charge was Mulkey, hitting an incredible .800 clip on four kills, including set point.
The Rebels continued to apply pressure and play with high intensity in the second set, building an eight-point cushion at 10-2 before Missouri State called for its first timeout of the frame. The squad took advantage of some different arms on offense, as both middles Warnell and Sultemeier, Bars as the setter, and libero Purcell all tallied a kill in the first 10 points of the set.
A 10-1 run highlighted the second set, where the Rebels used 4-0 and 6-0 runs to build another commanding lead. The Bears attempted to thwart the victory, securing six of seven points to bring the score to 23-18 and then narrowing the gap to 24-20 before a service error delivered the Rebs a 2-0 match lead.
Ole Miss used the same routine in the third game, continuing to carry the momentum, taking a 10-point lead at 15-5 and forcing Missouri State to burn their second timeout of the set. In a near-repeat performance of Friday's finale, the Rebels limited the Bears to just six kills as Ole Miss easily cruised to victory at 25-11.
