Ole Miss Sophomore Shoots 3-under, Leading Rebels at Badger Invitational
MADISON, Wis. – The first round of the new 2019-20 season is in the books for Ole Miss Men's Golf with a Rebel sitting atop the leaderboard. Jackson Suber shares the clubhouse lead after a 3-under performance on day one of the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.
Suber got off to a strong start with two birdies in his first two holes. The sophomore had his first miscue on hole No. 7, but immediately got it back with a birdie on No. 8. Making the turn at 2-under, Suber added a birdie on the par-5 11th. Two bogeys coming down the stretch were erased after an eagle on the par-5 16th to finish the round at 3-under (69).
"Jackson was a rock for us today and really played a steady round of golf," head coach Chris Malloy said. "I've been very impressed with how in control of his game he has been these first couple of weeks (of practice)."
Ole Miss sits in sixth place after the first 18, shooting a 3-over 291, just eight shots back of first place Notre Dame. The Rebels owned the par-5 16th hole in round one, going 6-under as a team (four birdies, one eagle) and finishing strong down the stretch to move into the top six.
"This certainly wasn't our best day as a group; however we had a lot of positives to take away and some good individual rounds," Malloy said. "There is no doubt in my mind that we will be ready to move up the leaderboard tomorrow."
Sarut Vongchaisit was right behind Suber in red figures, firing a first round 1-under 71. The sophomore made the turn at 1-over, and a strong 2-under finish on the back propelled him into the top-15 individually.
Jack Gnam shot a 2-over 74 that included a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th. It was Gnam's fourth hole-in-one of his golf career, but the first in a college tournament.
Veeti Mahonen had an impressive showing during his first collegiate round, playing as an individual. Starting on the back nine, the freshman went bogey-free his first 16 holes before his a miscue on No. 8. However, Mahonen holed out from 50 yards for eagle on No. 9 to finish his 2-under round.
The second round is set for tomorrow with tee times for Ole Miss starting at 9 a.m CT.
