Blackmon, Getz Both Shoot 1-under 71s on Day Two
MADISON, Wis. – Behind a pair of under-par rounds by seniors Brody Blackmon and Chip Getz Monday, the Ole Miss men's golf team is in sixth place heading into the final round of the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Rebels shot a second round 1-over 289 and sit 12 shots back of Kansas (286-282—568) and Notre Dame (283-285—568). Ole Miss had a bumpy start but rallied for 12 birdies over the last 13 holes as a team to stay in the top six.
"We were closer to putting together a good round of golf today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Unfortunately, we really shot ourselves in the foot out of the gates and dug a little too deep of a hole. However, I'm really proud of the way these guys hung in there and battled all day. We are due for a good round tomorrow. It was nice to see our seniors bounce back from a tough day yesterday as well."
Blackmon shot a bounce back 1-under 71. The senior had a bogey-free front nine until his first miscue on No. 10. Blackmon tallied two birdies on the final nine, but bogeys on the final two holes pushed him brought him back to 1-under for the day.
Getz fired a 1-under 71 to tie Blackmon for the low round of the day for Ole Miss. The senior went birdie-double towards the beginning of his round on holes No. 2 and 3, but he rallied by not making a bogey over his last 15 to finish the round under par. Getz is tied for 42nd overall heading into tomorrow's final round.
Jackson Suber is the top Rebel on the leaderboard through 36 holes, tied for 15th overall. The sophomore followed his opening round 69 (-3) with a 2-over 74 today. Two bogeys early on in the round were erased with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 7 and 8. Suber was even par until the last hole of the day, which saw him make a double-bogey.
Sarut Vongchaisit was 4-over through five, but battled the last 13 holes, going 3-under, to finish at 1-over for the day. The sophomore is in the top-25 individually, shooting 71-73—144 to sit at level par.
One day after making a hole-in-one, Jack Gnam started 3-over through his first five holes before finishing bogey-free the last 13 holes with one birdie, a three on the par-4 seventh, to match Suber at 2-over for the day. Ole Miss dominated No. 7 throughout the round as four of the five Rebels birdied the hole. Gnam is tied for 42nd overall after back-to-back 74s.
The final round is set to begin tomorrow with tee times for Ole Miss starting at 9:45 a.m. CT.
