Tyree Scores Career-High 36 in Return from Injury
OXFORD, Miss. – Returning from a back injury that caused him to miss the previous game, Breein Tyree put the Ole Miss men's basketball team on his back Saturday night. The senior guard scored a career-high 36 points, but it wasn't enough as the Rebels (9-8, 0-4) dropped a tight battle to LSU, 80-76, in The Pavilion.
Tyree played 39 minutes in his first game back, shooting 12 of 20 from the field as well as a perfect 9 for 9 from the free throw line. However, the rest of the Rebels struggled at the charity stripe by going 0 of 10, a rarity for a team that entered the night shooting 84.9 percent in SEC games. Meanwhile, LSU made 24 of 27 (88.9 percent) free throws throughout the night.
Blake Hinson added 13 points, while Khadim Sy tallied 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Ole Miss starters accounted for 73 of the team's 76 points, as a three from Bryce Williams in the final minute was the only points from the bench.
Javonte Smart's 20 points paced the Tigers (13-4, 5-0 SEC), and Emmitt Williams added 17. LSU held the rebounding advantage 47-31, grabbing 12 offensive boards that led to 21 second chance points.
Ole Miss scored the first five points of the game thanks to a bucket by Sy and a three-pointer by Devontae Shuler. Tyree took over the scoring from there, scoring 11 of the Rebels' next 13 points to push the home team out to an 18-11 advantage. The lead escalated to nine points after a Hinson three, but LSU responded with a 10-2 run to make it a one-point game.
The game remained tight for the rest of the half, and it was only fitting that the two teams went into the locker room knotted up at 36-36. Tyree had 15 points to pace Ole Miss, while Smart had a dozen for the Tigers.
Just like at the start of the contest, the Rebels scored the first five points of the second half. However, LSU caught fire from beyond the arc to regain the lead. Three consecutive three-pointers sparked a 14-2 run to push the Tigers ahead, 50-43.
LSU increased the margin to double digits, 57-47, before Ole Miss went on a run of its own. Back-to-back threes by Hinson quickly cut the deficit to four, the latter courtesy of a steal-and-assist combo by Austin Crowley. The Tigers got a bucket before Sy countered with a baby hook. Five consecutive free throws from Tyree found the bottom of the net, giving Ole Miss the lead back. After another Rebel stop of the defensive end, Tyree found Sy down low for an easy deuce. Coming out of the media timeout, Tyree doubled the Ole Miss lead, 65-59, with another three-pointer.
The Tigers got to the free throw line and took advantage of their opportunities to regain the lead. A 9-2 run, with the help of seven free throws, put LSU ahead 70-69 with 4:30 to go. Tyree found the bucket to put Ole Miss back up, but the Tigers answered by getting to the basket on three straight possessions. The Rebels continued to battle, but LSU made its final 10 free throws of the game and iced it to remain unbeaten in SEC play.
Up next, Ole Miss returns to the familiar road for back-to-back games away from home. First, the Rebels head north to face the Tennessee Volunteers (Jan. 21). Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network. In one week, Ole Miss will play its fifth road contest over the past seven games when it invades Georgia to battle the Bulldogs (Jan. 25).
