Softball Hits the Ground Running with First Spring Practice

1/7/2020 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – With the first official game of the 2020 season exactly one month away, Ole Miss returned to the clay at the Ole Miss Softball Complex on Tuesday for its first spring practice.

"It was both refreshing and exciting to be back out with the team for practice today," said interim head coach Ruben Felix. "I especially want to thank athletics director Keith Carter and chancellor Glenn Boyce for stopping by and spending some time with the team. The players were pumped to be back out there after a much-needed break and we're all thrilled to get started."

The day began with a morning session of offensive instruction, with players taking their cuts both on the field and in the cages of the indoor hitting facility. Meanwhile, the Rebels' group of six pitchers worked with pitching coach Kim Schuette through a series of drills. The team then returned in the afternoon for a defensive session, working in groups before opening up into a full field team defensive shift.

Ole Miss returns 18 of 22 letterwinners from last season's squad that claimed the program's second-ever NCAA Regional Championship and advanced to the Super Regional round. Additionally, the Rebels add in a talented crop of seven newcomers, including six true freshmen.

The Rebs kick off the season Feb. 5-7 at the NFCA Division 1 Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. Ole Miss will play five games in the Sunshine State, matching up with Louisville, NC State, Illinois, Notre Dame and Liberty.
