Men’s Tennis to Compete in Auburn Invitational

10/1/2020 | Men's Tennis

The Rebels will begin the 2020-21 season on Friday, Oct. 2nd, against four SEC opponents

OXFORD, Miss. –  Ole Miss will head to Auburn, Alabama and compete in matches from Friday to Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Rebels will take on players from the Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide and Vanderbilt Commodores in intraconference play. The Auburn Invite is the first of three fall events for the Rebels. This will be the team's first competitive match since dueling at Tennessee on March 8 and resuming play under new COVID-19 health and safety procedures.

The Rebels return seven student athletes to the 2020-21 roster and welcome two newcomers. Coach Toby Hansson led the team to a 10-4 (1-2 SEC) record last spring. The Rebels ranked as high as No. 11 in the national ITA rankings and ended the season ranked No. 15 in the final rankings on March 10. Despite the shortened season, the Rebels were highly recognized for their achievements. Men's tennis earned the distinctions of having one ITA All-American doubles pairing, one Southern Region Rookie of the Year, seven ITA Scholar-Athletes, and one SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The Auburn Invite will provide a preview of the spring when Ole Miss will face conference opponents in dual matches. Florida, Alabama and Vanderbilt all ranked top 50 in the final ITA team rankings of 2020. The Gators ranked No. 10 at the conclusion of last season and return the No. 5 ranked singles player in the nation. The Rebels were 4-4 versus ranked opponents last spring and defeated two top 20 programs. Ole Miss has competed in the prestigious NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship 26 consecutive times and will look to extend that streak starting this Friday.

There will be two slates of matches per day over the weekend. The morning session will take place at 9 a.m. CT and the afternoon session will occur at 2 p.m.
