Women’s Tennis Wins Seven Matches at Day Two of Music City Scramble

Rebels Won Six of Eight Matches Against Tennessee
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss women's tennis won notched seven total wins on day two of three at the Music City Scramble on Saturday.
Eight Ole Miss players competed in thirteen singles matches vs. Tennessee and Vanderbilt, going 7-13 overall. If the first two sets were split, a 10-point tiebreaker was played in place of a full third set.
vs. Tennessee
The Rebels won five of seven matches against the Volunteers, including three third-set tiebreaks. After splitting the first two sets, Alexa Bortles defeated Johanna Silva, 13-11, Tiphanie Fiquet defeated Rebeka Mertena, 10-7, and Lillian Gabrielsen defeated Esther Adeshina, 10-5, in first-to-10 third sets. With the three wins, the Rebels improved to 5-0 in tiebreaks.
In straight-set wins, Sabina Machalova defeated Tennessee's Carly Briggs, 6-4, 6-2, and Reka Zadori defeated Tennessee's Callie Creath, 6-4, 6-1.
In losing efforts, Kelsey Mize fell 6-4, 6-2, to UT's Daria Kuczer, and Elysia Pool lost 6-4, 6-1 to Tenika McGriffin. After facing McGriffin, Pool earned the first singles win of her collegiate career, defeating Creath 6-1, 6-1.
vs. Vanderbilt
In a come-from-behind effort, Fiquet defeated the Commodore's Holly Staff in the tiebreaker, 11-9, after mirroring the first two sets 1-6 and 6-1.
The Rebels fell to Vanderbilt in five hard-fought straight-set defeats. Marcella Cruz defeated Gabrielsen 7-6 (4), 6-3, snapping the perfect tiebreak record for Ole Miss. Kelsey Mize battled former ranked player Amanda Meyer down to the wire, ultimately falling 7-5, 7-6 (1). Bortles was forced to retire down a set at 5-0 in the second to her opponent Emma Kurtz.
Coming Up
Ole Miss will return to action tomorrow to compete in day three of the Music City Scramble. The Rebels are scheduled to face Auburn in singles at 9 a.m. CT, followed by Tennessee in doubles at 12:30.
