Ole Miss Travels to UAB This Weekend
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss associate head coach for cross country Ryan Vanhoy met with members of the media on Monday to preview the Rebels' trip to UAB this weekend.
Opening Statement
"Cross country has a competition this Friday morning in Birmingham, we will be competing at the Blazer Classic hosted by UAB. This will be an inter-regional type competition. We'll have probably 10 or 15 teams from around our region, SEC, ACC, some other good cross country programs within the sort of southeast footprint. Really good opportunity for our teams to line up one final time during the regular season prior to SECs and give us a chance to fine-tune our racing skills just a little bit and some more experience for our younger athletes who are still learning the ropes for college cross country.
We've had a really good last two-week training period after our last competition. We've been training really hard, so we should have all eyes fixed on October 30, but we will use this last competition here as a stepping stone and a final checkpoint prior to heading into SECs.
One final thing, Waleed Suliman was SEC Runner of the Week last week, it was announced after our Monday press conference. Anytime you have someone that's recognized with conference honors I want to make sure to shout that person out. Obviously, Waleed has been a star for us for four seasons now, and heading into his senior year he's done a great job. He's working really hard and has big goals for SECs and beyond."
On how competing with a condensed schedule has been this season
"It hasn't been too different to be honest, I think the real difference that you see is that our season just got shortened by three weeks. Typically, our real season doesn't start until SECs, our regional meet and our national meet, and those are all within a three week period. If anything, it's truncated the time schedule we have to get ready. The regular season competitions have felt very normal compared to what they usually are, so if anything it puts a little bit more of a focus on the SEC meet because, in essence, that is our national championship for the fall. Hasn't changed much in terms of regular season, but it's just sped up our training a little bit and changed a couple things now when our focus is on one singular meet as opposed to three."
