Rebels a week away from the start of the 2020 season
OXFORD, Miss.— Only seven days remain until Ole Miss takes the court for their first match of the highly anticipated 2020 season.
To check in with the latest updates from the Rebels, junior setter Gabby Easton and freshman right side hitter Samantha Schnitta chatted with our own Seth Austin, as they prepare for their opening match against Texas A&M on Oct. 22.
SETTING IT UP
As transferring to Ole Miss after spending her first two seasons at Clemson, Easton is ready to make an impact on the court despite the crazy transition and navigating COVID-19.
"I've been fortunate to have a great staff and a really great group of girls around me that have really helped me to adjust," said Easton. "Our staff pushes us every day to get better in the gym, so I am really excited to learn from them."
After appearing in 42 matches as a Tiger, Easton decided to make the change and become a Rebel for her final two seasons of eligibility.
"I just really felt like Oxford was a home for me," said Easton. "Everything that Oxford and Ole Miss provides is just second to none, and I am just really grateful for the opportunity to be here."
The competition for the starting setter spot remains strong between Easton, senior Lauren Bars and freshman Callaway Cason, but she views it as a great opportunity to grow.
"Competing with Lauren and Callaway is awesome. We really bounce off of each other and we all learn from each other, do film together," said Easton. "I think it's just a great environment and a culture where we have a really competitive gym but everyone's just rooting for each other too."
LUCKY LEFTY
A left-handed right side is a rare commodity to find, but the Rebels have sure discovered that in Schnitta. Her style of play is an added benefit to Ole Miss' offensive attack heading into the fall.
"I'm hoping to bring a lot of shots and a lot of diversity," said Schnitta. "It's kind of different to block a lefty, so sometimes it takes blockers a couple of times to understand."
Schnitta enters Ole Miss with a strong family pedigree behind her, as both parents attended the university. Her mother Kate was All-SEC in volleyball her senior year in 1992, while her father Brian played football for the Rebels.
"Just a little bit of pressure," said Schnitta. "Just a little bit of pressure, to be a little bit better than mom. Hopefully we can be better."
Ole Miss will kick off the 2020 fall campaign Thursday Oct. 22nd against Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. CT. The opening match will be airing nationally on the SEC Network.
