Ole Miss in Third Following Round 1 at Old Waverly Golf Club.

WEST POINT, Miss. – Three Ole Miss women's golfers shot under par Monday during the first round of The Ally as the Rebels fired a season-best 284 (-4) and currently sit in third place as a team.

Ellen Hume (-2), Kennedy Swann (-2) and Julia Johnson (-1) are all ranked in the top 10 individually after the first 18 at Old Waverly Golf Club. The Rebels lead the field in scoring on par-4s (E).

"We played really well today, especially when it came to course management," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We did a great job of minimizing mistakes and trying to avoid the big numbers. Overall, we did a lot of great things out there today and that was encouraging to see."

Playing in her second career tournament as a Rebel, Hume started hot with three birdies and five pars on her first eight holes. She is tied for sixth after the first 18 holes (70). After a bogey before the turn, the Whitwell, England, native rebounded to birdie the 389-yard, par-4 on No. 1. Another bogey on No. 3 would drop her to 2-under, but the junior made par on the last six holes to finish in the red on the day.

Swann, a senior from Austin, Texas, went birdie-bogey-bogey-birdie to start her day before settling in and registering 10 pars and three birdies in her final 14 holes to finish at 2-under. Swann, currently tied for sixth individually, continued to dominate par 5s, tallying birdies on three of the four lengthy holes and leads the field in par 5 scoring (-3). Of the course of four rounds this season, she has recorded 12 birdies, three pars and just one bogey on par 5s.

Johnson joins Hume and Swann in the top 10 after firing a first round 71 (-1). She began the day with a birdie on the 499-yard, par 5 No. 10 and made the turn at even par. A birdie, followed by a double bogey, left Johnson at 1-over thru 11, but the junior ended her round with five pars and a birdie on each of the final two holes.

Sophomore Andrea Lignell was also solid for the Rebels, shooting a 1-over, 73. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native leads the field with 15 pars and currently sits in a tie for 26th individually. Chiara Tamburlini, a sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, rounded out play for Ole Miss with a 4-over, 76 and is tied for 46th.

The Rebels will be back on the course Tuesday morning and are paired with Florida and Auburn. Tamburlini will get things started for Ole Miss and is scheduled to tee off at 9:30 a.m. CT.

"All you can ask for going into day two is to be within striking distance, and we're right there," Henkes said. "We didn't putt great today, but we just told the girls to keep the same game plan and the putts will eventually start falling."
