Rebels Seven Shots Back of South Carolina for Tourney Lead

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Ole Miss women's golf team finished the second round at The Ally, in West Point, Mississippi, on Tuesday with a 3-over 291 and current sit in fourth place headed into the final round at Old Waverly Golf Club (284-291—575).

The Rebels sit seven shots back of tournament leader South Carolina, who fired a 281 (-7) on Tuesday to take over the team lead.

"We just really struggled down the stretch today. We had a lot of bogies and mistakes on some easy holes, so we just need to sharpen that up a little bit," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Tomorrow we just need to come out and go with our gut, instead of overthinking things, especially when it comes to putting."

Two sophomores led the way for Ole Miss during the second round. Andrea Lignell and Chiara Tamburlini both carded an even par, 72 during their 18 holes on Tuesday.

The highlight for Lignell came on the 474-yard, par 5, at No. 2. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native drove the ball into the middle of the fairway and then hit a 5-wood to the front fringe, about 30 feet from the pin. Lignell then drained the long putt for her second eagle in as many tournaments. Lignell is tied for 19th overall (73-72—145) headed into the final round of play.

Tamburlini rebounded from a first round 76 (+4) to shoot even par and is currently tied for 37th overall. She led the Rebels with 12 pars and four birdies on the day.

Ellen Hume, a junior from Whitwell, England, maintained a place in the top 15 with a second round 73 (+1). Hume started the day strong, firing a 3-under on her front nine, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and 2. She would run into a rough patch on the back nine with four bogies to end her round at 1-over.

Julia Johnson is the third Rebel in the top 20, currently sitting in a tie for 19th, after a second round 74 (+2). Johnson tied Tamburlini with four birdies through Tuesday's 18 holes. Senior Kennedy Swann rounded out play for Ole Miss with a 4-over, 76. Swann (70-76—146) is in a five-way tie for 24th place overall.

Wednesday's third and final round at Old Waverly Golf Club will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

"The team as a whole is hitting the ball really well, so I know there's greatness there," Henkes said. "We just need to tap into it and hopefully tomorrow is the day it all comes together for us."
