Hume Paces the Rebels with 12th Place Finish at Old Waverly
WEST POINT, Miss. – For the second consecutive tournament, the Ole Miss women's golf team finished fourth as a team in an SEC-heavy tourney as the Rebels continued fall play at The Ally in West Point, Mississippi.
Ole Miss shot an even par 288 on Wednesday at Old Waverly Golf Club to finish at 1-under (284-291-288—863) for the three-day tournament. The Rebels finished ahead of 10 other SEC teams in their second tournament of the 2020-21 season.
"It was definitely promising to see the way we finished because we were trending in the wrong direction at the beginning of the round," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We righted the ship around our sixth or seventh hole and got things going in the right direction. I'm extremely proud of the girls for not giving up and fighting all the way until the end."
For the second straight day, sophomore Chiara Tamburlini turned in the best round of the day for Ole Miss. Tamburlini fired a team-high four birdies on her way to a 2-under, 70. She finished the tournament in a tie for 22nd individually (76-72-70—218).
Kennedy Swann rebounded from a 4-over, 76 on Tuesday to shoot an even par 72 during the final round at Old Waverly to earn a 22nd place finish. Swann tied Tamburlini with four birdies, including three over her final six holes of the round. The senior from Austin, Texas, led the Rebels and finished 11th in the field with 12 birdies throughout the tournament.
Ellen Hume, a transfer from Charleston Southern, turned in her best finish as a Rebel. Hume shot a final round 73 (+1) and finished in a tie for 12th place to pace Ole Miss (70-73-73—216). She led the Rebels in scoring on the par 5s throughout the event (-5). The Whitwell, England, native was 3-over through her first eight holes, was played steady the rest of the way with eight pars and two birdies over her final 10 holes.
Julia Johnson tied teammates Tambulini and Swann for 22nd overall after a final round 73 (+1), for a three-day total of 218 (71-74-73). It snapped a streak of seven straight tournaments in which Johnson had finished inside the top 15. Sophomore Andrea Lignell rounded out play for the Rebels with a 5-over, 77 on Wednesday. Lignell shot a 222 (73-72-77) over the three-day event and finished in a tie for 38th.
Ole Miss will now make its way to Atlanta for the East Lake Cup, which opens at historic East Lake Golf Club, on Monday, Oct. 26.
The four-team tournament, which features some of the top teams in collegiate golf, begins with one round of stroke play, followed by match play. Quarterfinals and semifinals taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The three-day prestigious tournament will be televised live on Golf Channel.
"It's a big honor to play in the East Lake Cup and the girls love playing match play," Henkes said. "Competing against these really good teams in the SEC, as well as Texas, is a lot of fun and a good challenge for our team. Playing such good competition week-in and week-out will only make us better as the season progresses."
