Hume, Swann Win Individual Title at East Lake Cup

Rebels Earn No. 1 Seed Headed into Match Play
ATLANTA – The Ole Miss women's golf team is a first-time participant in the prestigious East Lake Cup, but you would have never guessed based off their performance Monday afternoon in Atlanta.
Junior Ellen Hume and senior Kennedy Swann both fired a 3-under, 69 to earn individual co-champion honors as Ole Miss shot a 283 (-5) as a team to obtain the top seed headed into Tuesday's match play semifinals. The Rebels will take on fourth seeded Texas.
In total, four Rebels earned top 10 finishes during Monday's stroke play round.
"Today was an all-around great day for our program," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Everyone on this team really pulls for each other, so I know that Ellen was just as excited for Kennedy as Kennedy was for her. Both of them played really smart golf down the stretch and I couldn't be any happier for the two of them."
Hume opened play with a birdie on No. 1, but found herself at 1-over after a bogey on No. 2 and 5. The Whitwell, England, native got back to even par with a birdie on the par 3, No. 9. Hume found her stroke and gained some confidence headed down the stretch, tallying three birdies on the final five holes to put a little pressure on the field.
"I definitely knew there were some chances out there to get a low score and a few birdies on the last few holes," Hume said. "I think my up-and-down on No. 14 really gave me so momentum. I was in a difficult place, but I was able to hit it within a foot. I then went on to birdie No. 15, which is a tough hole and then had a good putt on No. 17."
With Hume into the clubhouse as the leader at 3-under, Swann knew that she had to make her move on the 448-yard, par 5 on No. 18. Swann passed that test with flying colors, sinking a 16-foot birdie putt to tie Hume for individual honors.
"A lot of times, I tend to put too much pressure on myself in those situations," Swann said. "It definitely helped knowing that a teammate already had the title and that if I did miss it, Ole Miss was still going to hold it. I just took pressure and expectations out of it and just focused on putting a good roll on it."
Hume paced the Rebels with five birdies on the day as Ole Miss led the field as a whole with 18 birdies, five more than the next closest team. Hume and Swann both finished at 2-under on par 5 scoring, which tied for second in the field.
Sophomore Chiara Tamburlini shot an even par on Monday and finished seventh individually. The St. Gallen, Switzerland, native opened play steady with seven pars on the front nine. After a rough patch at No. 10 and No. 14, Tamburlini finished strong, registering a birdie on her final two holes to end the day at 72.
Sitting at 4-over headed into No. 13, senior Julia Johnson showed why she's one of the top players in the country, fighting back to birdie the par 4, No. 16 and then had the shot of the day at No. 17. Johnson's approach shot from 110-yards out found the bottom of the cup for an eagle and helped push the senior to 1-over (73) on the day.
Andrea Lignell, a sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, rounded out play for the Rebels with a 76 (+4) and finished in a tied for 15th.
The Rebels will begin semifinals of match play Tuesday morning at 10:05 a.m. CT with Swann leading things off. Golf Channel will again have live coverage of the even beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
"I think this will give us great momentum going into tomorrow," Hume said. "We're all very, very talented and it's been super close going into this tournament and it's nice to see all our hard work starting to pay off."
