Rebels Advance to Title Match in Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Ole Miss women's golf team continued its strong play in Atlanta, taking down Texas 4.5-0.5 in the semifinal round of the East Lake Cup on Tuesday.

The Rebels picked up wins from Kennedy Swann (1-up), Ellen Hume (2&1) and Chiara Tamburlini (2&1) to advance to Wednesday's championship round vs. South Carolina.

"Texas is a great team and they definitely put up a good fight for us today and made us work hard for it," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Really excited to move on to the next match and proud of the way the girls finished today"

Swann, who earned co-champions honors with Hume on Monday, chipped in for eagle on No. 18 to win her match 1-up in dramatic fashion over Texas' Sophie Guo. The Austin, Texas, native dropped the first hole, but then answered right back with a par on No. 2 to tie the match.

Swann briefly took a 1-up lead at No. 5 with a 48-foot birdie putt. The two would exchange wins on three straight holes, but Swann took the lead for good with a par on No. 9 and would finish it off with her clutch chip on the final hole.

"I was just kind of trying to play a bump-and-run, give myself four foot for birdie and put the pressure on her," Swann said. "I landed it on my spot and again, just trying to take the results out of it and just have a lot of fun out here."

Just minutes later, Hume pulled off a 2&1 upset win over Texas' Kaitlyn Papp, who is ranked No. 18 in the latest Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings.

The Whitwell, England, native was facing a 3-down deficit after nine holes, but came alive on the back nine to storm back for the victory. Hume birdied five of the eight holes she played on the back nine, including three of the final four for the come-from-behind win.

"Ellen was three down through nine, and walking down 10 fairway and I said to her, 'This is the nine you played great yesterday, let's step on the gas.' She came in with five birdies; that was pretty clutch. I'm really proud of her fight."

Tamburlini clinched the match win for the Rebels with a birdie putt on No. 17 to defeat the Longhorns' Bentley Cotton 2&1. The sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, never trailed in the match and held the lead from the ninth hole on.

Senior Julia Johnson held a 2-up lead at No. 16 when the Rebels secured their third point. Johnson used back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and 15 to take the lead late in the match. Sophomore Andrea Lignell wrapped up play for the Rebels and was tied when the matches were called.

Ole Miss and South Carolina will battle it out for the East Lake Cup title tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live TV coverage will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT on Golf Channel.

"We're just going to go out and give it our best again," Henkes said. "Kind of enjoy this for a moment and hit the reset button and get our minds straight for tomorrow's match."
