Rebels Down Top-Ranked South Carolina in Match Play Finals

ATLANTA – With the East Lake Cup title on the line, the Ole Miss women's golf team had the right person on the course trying to secure the championship for the Rebels.

Senior Julia Johnson improved her career match play record to 8-0 and earned a 1-up victory in the deciding match to give Ole Miss a 3-2 win over No. 1 South Carolina in the finals of the East Lake Cup on Wednesday.

"This was a dream come true to try to play in this tournament, and to win it is really just the cherry on top," Henkes said. "This is a surreal feeling being here, especially for Julia (Johnson), who was here freshman year and has kind of seen where we have been and where we are."

Johnson, a senior from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, found herself 1-down thru seven to South Carolina's Lois Kaye Go but was able to tie up the match with a par on No. 8. She was able to take a 1-up lead with a clutch birdie putt on No. 10. After a few back-and-forth holes, Johnson found herself leading 1-up with a hole to go. Johnson finished with a par on No. 18 to earn the title for the Rebels.

"That's why I like Julia in that fourth spot," head coach Kory Henkes said. "She's really steady. She keeps a level head when things get a little complicated out there, so I think she really kept it together and pulled through for us on the 18th hole."

Ellen Hume, who shared medalist honors with teammate Kennedy Swann, picked up the first point of the day for the Rebels with a commanding 7&6 win over South Carolina's Pimpnipa Panthong, who is ranked No. 34 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings. Hume was 1-under on the day thru 12 before securing the win.

Sophomore Andrea Lignell earned the other point for Ole Miss with a 3&2 win over Paula Kirner. Lignell jumped out to a quick lead after a par on No. 1. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native increased her lead to 3-up at the turn and never looked back to earn the match play win in 16 holes.

In the Rebels' other matches, Swann dropped a 3&2 decision to the No. 2 ranked amateur in the world, Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, while sophomore Chiara Tamburlini also fell 3&2.

The Rebels will now have a few months off from tournament play before picking back up in the spring.

"We don't want to stop yet," Henkes said. "We just want to keep building on what we have done, and hopefully the future is bright for us."
