Ole Miss Women’s Golf Leads Tourney in Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. – Seniors Julia Johnson and Kennedy Swann both carded season-low rounds during the first day of the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate Sunday to put the Ole Miss women's golf team in first place after 18 holes in Sarasota, Florida.
Johnson is second overall individually after tallying eight birdies for a 5-under, 67, while Swann sits in third place after a first round 68 (-4).
Ole Miss shot a 284 (-4) and currently leads Oklahoma State in the team standings by four strokes. The Rebels lead the field in birdies (22) and par-5 scoring (-3).
"This isn't a forgiving golf course and the wind was howling out there today, so to see the scores that Julia and Kennedy posted is really impressive," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Our one fault of the day was that we struggled a little bit down the stretch with some bogies and double bogies, but overall, it was some really solid golf by the whole team."
After bogies on No. 2 and No. 3 put her at 2-over thru four holes, Johnson settled down and birdied seven of her next eight holes to quickly jump into red numbers. The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native would add another birdie on No. 15 to finish her day at 5-under. Johnson is ranked second in the field in par-5 scoring (-2) and third on par-4s (-3).
Swann, currently ranked the No. 11 collegiate golfer by Golfweek, was steady all day, tallying par or better on 17 of the 18 holes. Her only blemish was a double-bogey on 17, but the Austin, Texas, native rebounded to birdie the 18th and final hole.
Sophomore Andrea Lignell carded a 73 (+1) and currently sits in a tie for 15th after 18 holes of play. Rounding out play for the Rebels were Ellen Hume and Chiara Tamburlini. Hume sits in a tie for 38th place after a 4-over, 76, while Tamburlini shot an 80 (+8).
The Rebels will tee off second round of play Monday morning with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. CT.
