Men’s Golf Shoots Second Straight Under Par Round
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – A second straight round in the 60s by Veeti Mahonen paced the Ole Miss men's golf team on day two of the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate Monday. The freshman played the final 12 holes bogey free en route to a 3-under 68, jumping into the top 10 with 18 holes remaining in the tournament.
As a team, the Rebels shot under par for the second straight round. Ole Miss posted a 281 (-3), moving to 11-under for the tournament, tied for eighth. Vanderbilt had another strong day on its home course to maintain the lead at 32-under (271-265—536).
"I was proud of the way the guys hung in there after really stumbling midway through our round," said head coach Chris Malloy. "That's an area that we harped on after our last event, and they responded today. We just have to clean up some silly mistakes, and we should have a great round tomorrow."
Mahonen has played the last 33 holes 10-under, battling back from his three bogeys to start the tournament. After recording nine birdies in the first round, he added four more this afternoon while making only one bogey. The Finland native parred the first four holes before a birdie on the par-3 fifth. He gave the shot back at No. 6 but rattled off seven straight pars to remain even on the day. Breaking the par streak, Mahonen produced back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15. His final birdie of the day came at No. 17, and a bogey-free back nine allowed the freshman to break 70 once again and jump into a tie for ninth at 7-under.
After a career-low 65 (-6) yesterday, Jack Gnam used a strong back nine to post another under-par round. The sophomore could not find a birdie on the opening nine, and with three bogeys, went out in 38 (+3). However, he quickly turned that around with three straight birdies to start the final nine. A bogey at No. 13 pushed him to 1-over before he flipped the script to 1-under thanks to an impressive performance at the par-5 18th. After a great drive, Gnam's smooth 6-iron to the middle of the green set up a 30-foot eagle attempt. He let his putter do the rest, dropping the bomb to get into red figures and wrap up a round of 70 (-1). Alongside Mahonen, Gnam is tied for ninth (-7) through 36 holes.
Freshman Brett Schell made a team-high five birdies during his round, including two straight to end the day, on his way to an even-par 71. Jackson Suber shot a 72 (+1) for the second consecutive round, starting the back nine with a birdie at No. 10 before added another on No. 18. As a team, the Rebels tallied one eagle and two birdies on the final hole.
Ole Miss concludes its second fall tournament Wednesday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Rebels are paired with Tennessee and Alabama.
