Sophomore Lignell Leads Rebels with First Round 73
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Ole Miss women's golf team opened their fall season with a first round 302 (+14), on Monday, at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Blessings Golf Club, which hosted the latest NCAA Championships in 2019, only saw five golfers on the women's side shoot under par.
"The course is really, really tough," head coach Kory Henkes said. "It's one of those courses that you have to put serious thought into every shot and if you don't, it will really make you pay."
Andrea Lignell paced the Rebels with a 1-over, 73 and currently sits in a tie for ninth individually. The sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, started her round strong, making birdie on four of her first seven holes. Her only hiccup on the day came on No. 3 where she recorded a triple-bogey on the 154-yard, par 3. Lignell finished strong making par or better on her final six holes.
Lignell's fellow Swede, Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, currently sits in a tie for 20th after a first round 75 (+3). Hutchinson-Kay rebounded from bogeys on three of her first four holes to birdie No. 14, 15 and 16. Hutchinson and Lignell led the Rebels in birdies during the first round with five.
Senior Kennedy Swann opened her 2020 campaign with a 4-over, 75. The Austin, Texas, native birdied No. 10 to start the first round. She would go on to birdie three more holes on the day and is tied for 25th individually. With three birdies on the four par 5s, Swann led the Rebels and ranked third in the field in par-5 scoring (-3).
Julia Johnson added a 78 (+6), while Ellen Hume posted an 82 (+10) in her Ole Miss debut. Johnson rebounded with seven pars and one birdie in her final nine holes after shooting 5-over on the opening nine.
Tournament host Arkansas holds the team lead, firing a 1-over 289 behind Brooke Matthew's first round 67 (-5).
The Rebels will get another perspective on the course in Round 2, as they'll tee off Tuesday morning at 9:31 a.m. CT.
"If we can minimize some of our mistakes from today, we'll be in better shape moving forward," Henkes said. "I definitely saw some positive things from this first round. We just need to build off those things from today and keep working hard."
The Golf Channel will once again have live coverage of the event beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT.
