Rebels Fourth Heading into Final Round
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Julia Johnson rebounded from a tough first round at the Blessings Collegiate to fire a 1-under, 71 on Tuesday to lead the Ole Miss women's golf team in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Rebels shot a 295 (+7) and jumped up two spots in the team standings (302-295—597). Ole Miss, who leads the field in birdies with 34, is in fourth place heading into the final day of play on Wednesday.
"We played much better as a team today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We minimized our mistakes and saw more putts drops. We look forward to another opportunity tomorrow."
Johnson, who opened the Blessings Collegiate with a first round 78 (+6), carded seven pars, one birdie and one bogey on her first nine holes. She ended her day with five birdies on the back nine, the most by any player in the field during Tuesday's second round.
"The last nine holes were kind of a roller coaster," Johnson said. "I'm hitting the ball the best I've hit it in months and I'm feeling really good about my swing. There are some tough holes out there and bogeys just happen. I'm happy with the way I bounced back."
The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native leads the Rebels and ranks fifth in the field in par-4 scoring (+1). Johnson was just one of 11 golfers to shoot under par on Tuesday and currently sits in a tie for 14th overall.
Sophomore Andrea Lignell is seventh individually after another round of 73 (+1). Lignell continues to be solid on par 5s with three pars and one birdie. She currently ranks third in the field in par-5 scoring (-3).
Kennedy Swann improved on day two shooting a second round 74 (+2). The Austin, Texas, native was second on the team with five birdies on Tuesday, including three birdies on the four par 5s. Over the course of two days, Swann has birdied six of the eight par 5s and is tied for 24th overall.
Rounding out play for the Rebels were juniors Ellen Hume and Ellen Hutchinson-Kay. Hume shot a 5-over, 77, while Hutchinson-Kay sits in a tie for 38th after a second round 80 (+8).
Tournament host Arkansas holds a 10-shot lead over the field after firing a 287 (-1) on Tuesday. The Rebels will wrap up play at the Blessings Collegiate Wednesday as they'll tee off at 9:09 a.m. CT.
