Volleyball Practice Report: Oct. 7

10/7/2020 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. —With a little over two weeks left until the first serve of the season, volleyball is gearing up the intensity in practice as Oct. 22 draws nearer.

To catch up with the latest updates from the Rebels, head coach Kayla Banwarth and assistant coach Maggie Scott sat down with our own Seth Austin, as they prepare for their opening match against Texas A&M.

THE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES
The Rebels are back in full practice mode, after training on and off for the past nine and a half months and are prepared to get back in action as the first match is closer in view.

"It's starting to get real, now that we're talking about how we manage the team's legs during a game week. We have to come up with starting line-ups. Those kinds of things," said Banwarth. "Now that we're getting closer to matches, all these things are starting to happen.

"We've put a lot of really good work in this year, and the team is ready to compete. I think that would all translate well to matches," said Banwarth. "As we continue to be in season and get that in match experience, it'll just get better and better."

"We've been seeing a lot of progress. The past two practices we've had, have been maybe some of the best since our staff has been here," said Scott. "It's a good time to be peaking, and we're definitely headed in the right direction."

LET THE COMPETITION BEGIN
According to Banwarth, no starting lineup has been set in stone. Heading into practice each day is a way to prove what everyone has on the court, as anyone on the roster has the opportunity to crack the starting line-up.

"Everyone is starting from scratch for me. At this point in the year, we're in compete mode," said Banwarth. "I told them, I want to know who's going to win, who's going to help their teammates win."

"Our best six players will be on the court, and that's made for some pretty gnarly competition in practice."

"The level of competition has been nice," said Scott. "For us to be able to get in the gym with them, and now we get to play more sixes, it's been fun.

LATEST ADDITION
After picking up middle blocker Sasha Ratliff, a late transfer from San Diego, the Rebels are looking forward to the strong presence she'll provide at the net.

"When she became available in the transfer portal, it was a no brainer we were going to go after her," remarked Banwarth. "She's super athletic, super talented. Played overseas, played internationally and has done really cool things in the sport of volleyball."

The Rebels will begin the 2020 fall campaign Thursday Oct. 22nd against Texas A&M at 6 p.m. CT. The season opening match will be airing on the SEC Network.
