OXFORD, Miss. – After ending the match in a 4697-4697 tie, the Ole Miss rifle team took down No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks on center shots 308-284 in a thrilling victory to stay undefeated on the season.

Competing in their first match in a month, the Rebels got off to a slow start in smallbore. As a team, they fired a mark of 2323, but it didn't take them long to shake off the rust. All five counters stormed back in air rifle with scores of 590 or better to tie Alaska Fairbanks and break the program air rifle record with a team score of 2374.

With both teams tied at 4697 apiece, the tiebreaker was decided by centered shots, where the Rebels held a 309-284 advantage to win the match.

Overall, Lea Horvath paced the field, tying her personal best aggregate score of 1189. She was followed by Kristen Derting with a mark of 1181. Junior Kamilla Kisch bested her career-high aggregate score by three points, finishing with an 1176. Erin Walsh recorded a solid score of 1172, while a strong air rifle performance fueled senior Sophia Cuozzo, as she fired a career-high mark of 1168.

In smallbore, Derting led the way, turning in an impressive score of 591, although her mark didn't factor into the team's scoring. Counters Abby Buesseler, Claire O'Neel and Jillian Zakrzeski all competed in the first relay. O'Neel fired a mark of 578 followed by Buesseler with a 575.

Horvath and Walsh shot in the second relay, turning in scores of 590 and 580, respectively. With Derting and Horvath both firing the top scores, it marked the second time this season that Ole Miss had two individuals register scores of 590 or better in smallbore

Serving as a counter for the first time this season, junior Zakrzeski fired the top air rifle score in the first relay with a mark of 593. She was followed by Buesseler and Cuozzo with identical scores of 591. The mark was also a career-best for Cuozzo, although it wouldn't factor into the scoring.

The second air rifle relay was packed full of career-high performances and school records for the Rebels. Kisch briefly tied the air rifle program record with alum Ali Weisz and Buesseler at 597. The junior used four perfect strings of 100 to help her record the top score. However, shortly after finishing, Horvath recorded a personal best score of 599. She started off firing 35 perfect shots before hitting a 9.4. The freshman didn't let it phase her, closing out her performance with 34 more perfect shots and a new school record in the process. Freshman Martina Gratz also got involved as an air rifle counter, tying her career-best with a 591.

Alaska Fairbanks jumped out to an early lead with an impressive team smallbore performance (2331). They went on to turn in a 2366 in air rifle, bringing their team score to 4697. Kellen McAferty paced the Nanooks with an aggregate score of 1179 (587 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle).

With the win, Ole Miss concludes its fall season. The Rebels will wrap up final exams and break for winter. They'll return to action in January, opening the winter slate with a neutral site match against Nebraska in Columbus, Ohio.
